Rocking Against album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big ...

| | Benny Carter Another Time, Another Place CDs (1996)
Rocking Against songs
$20.29 Alto saxophonists Benny Carter and Phil Woods were great friends and enjoyed playing together on a number of record dates, though this double-CD live recording from a 1996 extended gig at the Regattabar proved to be the former's final release before he retired from active performing a few years afterward. A few months shy of 89 years old at the time, Carter still gives his all on his instrument and sounds like someone decades younger, while Woods' naturally more outgoing style proves complementary to the senior musician. Backed by a strong rhythm section, including Carter's long-time pianist Chris Neville, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Sherman Ferguson, the two saxophonists have a ball as they play favorite standards, several Carter compositions, and gems penned by other jazz musicians. While fans of Carter and Woods will be delighted with this entire release, there are a few surprises. Carter's bluesy feature of "Willow Weep for Me" marks the only time he ever recorded it. The duo's robust, swinging setting of "On the Sunny Side of the Street" is a gem, as is Carter's swaggering "A Walkin' Thing." Beautifully recorded, this final meeting between Benny Carter and Phil Woods is one for the ages. ~ Ken Dryden
This double CD captures alto sax masters Benny Carter and Phil Woods in peak form at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA. Recorded over three nights in March of 1996, the album also features Carter regulars Chris Neville on piano and Sherman Ferguson on drums, with premiere Boston bassist John Lockwood. The repertoire includes standards as well as originals by each saxophonist.Carter and Woods have enjoyed a long-standing friendship, and on the all-too-rare occasions when they perform together each always inspires ...

$13.29 Lewis and Clark Musical ExpeditionJudging from the way their names fit together, maybe it was always meant to be: Once Dana Clark met Kevin Lewis it was only a matter of time until they became “The Lewis and Clark Musical Expedition.” They are a husband and wife duo who have shared performing, teaching, songwriting, and recording for more than seven years. With Dana singing and playing keyboard, mandolin, guitar, sax and a variety of flutes, and Kevin on bass and guitar, they create a smorgasbord of sound that is never boring. They play a wide variety of styles and manage to make it all sound like it comes straight from the heart: Blues to Beethoven, ragtime to rock, folk to jazz. The lyrics to their original songs offer valuable insight into the human experience, and they enjoy making audiences laugh with their humorous songs. Richard Mekdeci of Itoi Ministries wrote, “Lewis and Clark are the perfect match of heart and soul, entertainment and inspiration, professionalism and playfulness. Their love for music and for each other radiates on and off stage.” Lewis and Clark have recorded two CDs of original compositions, the recently released “Disguised As Poetry” and the earlier “Trust Your Heart to Lead You Home.” They have published two songbooks that include everything on the CDs and more. Every Monday they host a musical gathering at the listening room Radius Café, where they create music with a wide variety of guest musicians. They are experienced performers who are equally at home in house concerts, coffeehouses, churches, clubs, retreat centers, and conferences. They play regularly at the Unity Church of San Antonio, where Dana has been Music Director for five years. Besides working as a duo, they often perform as part of the all-original concert band Light Travelers with fellow songwriters Kit Holmes, Janet O’Connor, and Chris Pfeiffer. They maintain a large mailing list, and email their newsletter every week to their fans to let them know where they are performing. To sign up for their mailing list, email ...
