Whether a jazz artist prefers an acoustic or electric environment, dogma can easily get in the way of his/her creativity. At one extreme, you have bop purists who believe that electric instruments and rock rhythms have no place in jazz-at the other, you have electric musicians who believe that acoustic-oriented jazz has outlived its usefulness. Thankfully, Bruno Rĺberg is neither a dogmatist nor a musical ideologue. The Swedish bassist likes to keep his options open, which is why he can fit into either an electric or acoustic environment and doesn't limit himself to only one style of jazz. On Pentimento, Rĺberg's first album as a leader, he tends to be fusion-minded. Electric keyboards are used extensively, and Rĺberg's writing is often mindful of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report on this CD (which was recorded in 1990 and 1991 and released in 1992). But Rĺberg isn't actually emulating Zawinul's writing-while the admiration is there, Rĺberg is his own man and brings his own ideas to the table. For one thing, Rĺberg sometimes brings elements of Scandinavian folk to Pentimento's jazz foundation. Although Pentimento falls short of being a gem, Rĺberg's recording career was off to a decent start with this thoughtful debut. ~ Alex Henderson Pentimento refers to the reemergence on canvas of earlier layers, brush strokes, textures and images that an artist has since rethought, changed, painted over. As the painter \" repents,\" he resees his original ideas, and so recreates his painting.
