The experimental "punk opera" project includes 13 post-punk versions of John Lennon political and rare songs, 6 reprises of politically intense interviews with John Lennon.The Oz stresses that this is not your ordinary cover album."The main idea for the album is to show a life of a man through the songs, words and life of John," says Igor Salnikov of The Oz. "The sound is made 'a little' more aggressive than John used to do, but still the songs have the same melodic beauty and power. The goal was to understand all sorts of 'revolutions' that John Lennon experienced during his life, just as a regular human being and to put them into the realities of the present world.We try to show a little different understanding of John Lennon and really hope that people will see what we mean."About The Oz:The OZ was formed in the summer of 2005 in St. Petersburg, Russia, when musicians from several unrelated bands started working together on a project of punk and post-punk covers of political and obscure John Lennon songs. The band has been working in studio smoothing out the material for the album up until recently, and has been frequently performing in St. Petersburg and Moscow clubs and festivals. Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record.
