April Wine is a perfect example of a band that critics loved to loathe in the 1970s and 1980s -- you could fill an encyclopedia with all the negative reviews that First Glance received in 1978. Critics detested commercial hard rock/arena rock items like "Hot on the Wheels of Love," "Roller" and "Get Ready for Love" with a passion, but fans of the Canadian band paid no attention and bought the album anyway. First Glance wasn't meant to be challenging or cutting-edge; April Wine's mission was to pull the listener in with infectious grooves and hooks and enable him/her to escape -- and this album definitely accomplishes those things. One of April Wine's finest releases, First Glance is easily recommended to hard rock enthusiasts. ~ Alex Henderson

Don Henley I Can't Stand Still CD  (1982)

First Glance
CD $6.85  4 stars Audio Samples
Don Henley's first solo album may still have had the ghost of the Eagles lingering in the corners, but for the most part it showcases his stalwart partnership with producer and songwriter Danny Kortchmar. Lyrically, Henley's songs are a tad weak, but for an inaugural album from a man who had spent most of his career surrounded by multi-talented musicians and writers, on the whole it fairs quite well. His material deals with the hardships of love, the fickleness of the media, and the declining state of education, all induced with a friendly pop sound. The title track, a trouble-in-paradise love song, has Henley pouring his heart out with sugary angst, but is helped along with some avid keyboard work. "Dirty Laundry" is Henley's attack on the shallowness of the network newsperson that peaked at number three on Billboard's Top 40. Its bouncy chorus and contagious organ riffs proved that his role as a musician could conform to any style. His social commentary ...

In the mid/late-'80s, the rock scene was hard to decipher. With an over-saturation of new bands either aping Led Zeppelin's boogie woogie metal or glam pop candy, older rock fans were left scratching their heads in bewilderment. Lucky for them, such classic rock bands as Bad Company made strong returns, as proven by 1988's DANGEROUS AGE. Like the band's other '80s recordings, the songs are slightly more commercial than their grittier '70s output, with such titles as "No Smoke Without A Fire" and the title track being highlights. Out of print in the U.S.! Import pressing of this 1988 album from the British Blues ...

April Wine (like any good wine) got better with age, and the Canadians' brightest moment only arrived over a decade into their career with 1981's The Nature of the Beast. Opener "All Over Town" lurches into action on a lopsided riff before finding its awesome groove, -- a groove they seldom abandon through and to the end of the disc. All-around ...

Triumph Allied Forces CD  (1981) Remastered

CD $12.95  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology. With 1981's suitably named Allied Forces -- their fourth worldwide release and fifth overall -- the three members of Triumph put aside their differences and collaborated more seamlessly than ever before, fittingly delivering what is arguably the best album of their long career. Like the previous year's particularly intense Progressions of Power, and with the possible exception of a rather forgettable new track, "Ordinary Man," the pedestrian mid-paced rockers that had sometimes derailed previous Triumph albums were conspicuously absent here, replaced by snaggletoothed heavy metal carnivores courtesy of singing drummer Gil Moore, such as the opening "Fool for Your Love" and the unrelenting title track -- both of them as thrilling as they were catchy. Not to be outdone, vocalist/guitarist Rik Emmett recovered the top melodic hard rock form ...

Goodwin 2 CD  (2008)

CD $7.49
Four years in the making, and 10 songs in length, Goodwin's latest release "2" ups the ante for this Texas power-pop group. The sound is tighter and more consistent than the 2004 self-titled debut, but the trademark Goodwin sound is still there: walls of guitar, propulsive rhythms, and penetrating voices. In addition to a more polished sound, "2" also showcases the songwriting abilities of Daniel Gomez. There is no waste here ... each word is examined, measured, and perfectly placed, drenched in emotion and pouring heart out onto the dusty floor. What have the critics said about Goodwin's 2?Goodwin "Two Again" Goodwin's debut was an outstanding mix of killer rock and smart hook filled melodies. It's been a few years in the making, but the follow up "2" is almost ready, and this track from the new album shows that the band has matured in it's production and songwriting, and added a notch on the rock out factor, without losing any of the melody. This is one of those bands to keep a close eye/ear on... Killer stuff from a great band! -- PopBang.com review of "Two Again"I’ll admit that I’m one who generally prefers live electricity over studio polish, but purely on its own terms, Goodwin’s 2 is a finely-wrought example of that rarity, the Big Rock Record. The painstaking (and somewhat glacial) process of its creation paid off in a work that’s rich in sonic detail (kudos to Fort Worth Sound’s Bart Rose for the mix), none of which would matter if the songs didn’t deliver the emotional wallop that they do. -- Ken Shimamoto, ILoveFtw.comFollowing 2004's self-titled debut, 2 is 10 tracks of up-tempo rock that has its roots in the pummeling melodies of Foo Fighters and Cheap Trick, with a dash of All-American Rejects gloss thrown in for good measure. Vocalist Tony Diaz's muscular work holds these winning songs together (he's aided by guitarist/vocalist ...

Is Music Even Good?
Lazy Magnet Is Music Even Good? CD  (2007)

First Glance
CD $11.99  Audio Samples
Lazy Magnet are, if nothing else, not interested in a monolithic approach -- nor are they interested in a monolithic answer to their album title's question. Is Music Even Good? relies, mostly but not entirely, on a series of short tracks that are themselves further fragmented, all in the service of whatever the band or collective force that constitutes the group deems fit. It's not exactly hyperspeed cut-up collage but Mike Patton and Frank Zappa would appreciate a fair amount of what's going on. A song like "Conquest America," with its lullaby singalong of lyrics that could be from a Mars Volta record regarding the historical oppression of societal structures, isn't quite Elephant 6 going full-on prog, but it's closer to that than most, and with that as a start the rest of the album barely stops for breath. On the one hand things hit and run with such brief impact that about all one can do is appreciate what's going on briefly. Sometimes nothing sticks, but there are moments like a lengthy mood instrumental that takes the time to settle into a sound, while the vocal shifts on "Masters of Science Fiction" ...
