Together since the late 1990s, Dominican bachata duo Monchy y Alexandra have wowed the Latin music world with their passionate vocals, stirring songs, and obvious musical and personal rapport. This 2008 live concert album ties in with the DVD of the same name, and captures the stars in their most optimal setting: in front of adoring fans who bring out their fiery best.
The group presents this DVD/CD set recorded live in Puerto Rico, which includes all their greatest hits along with some new, never-before-heard tracks. | | N'Klabe I Love Salsa - Special Edition CD (2005) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
En Vivo Desde Bellas Artes CD music
$10.15 Taking their name from the term "en clave," a reference to the heartbeat of the Afro-Cuban rhythm section, N'Klabe declares that they are all about salsa and nothing else. With an honorable goal, to bring the love of salsa to a disenchanted generation, N'Klabe sets out to turn the tides with I Love Salsa!, their debut CD for Sony International. Lead vocalists Héctor José Torres Donato, Félix Javier Torres, and Johnny Maldonado Díaz have made a lot of progress toward that end, with a number one hit on Latin charts to their credit, "Amor de una Noche." N'Klabe is a radio success and a favorite with younger audiences. With a look even too clean-cut to be called boy band, and a sound that's even cleaner, the salsa that they love is all by the book. The arrangements, vocal/instrumental performance, and repertoire are all woefully unremarkable. Though not a strong selection for those already familiar with the style, this squeaky-clean debut performance has found a home with a new audience. N'Klabe has gone to great lengths, from the album's cover art to the title cut's coro, to reach a yet untapped generation of salsa lovers. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

En Vivo Desde Bellas Artes album
$8.79 Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Helmed by Ichaso (PINERO) with documentary-like realism, and carried by Anthony, who bears a striking (albeit thinner) resemblance to Lavoe, EL CANTANTE thoughtfully depicts the rise and fall of a remarkably talented vocalist unable to shake debilitating addiction. Husband and wife in real life, Anthony and Lopez reveal a convincing chemistry, and the movie bolsters the Puchi role to give J. Lo more screen time, an aesthetic decision than allows her gentle-yet-determined presence to play off of Anthony's troubled Lavoe. While off-stage drama receives ...
