With his slightly offensive name and wildman reputation, Memphis garage punk Jay Reatard isn't one for subtlety. He's also no slacker, and in addition to the many bands he's been part of, he's a prolific solo artist. SINGLES 06-07 fills in the blanks and gathers his scattered singles and EPs in one convenient place just before his debut in the bigger arena of Matador Records. The unbridled energy of Reatard's spiky, DIY style is well represented on the Darby Crash roar of "Night of Broken Glass" and the sunny, cracked-concrete new wave of "All Over Again." While he comes off as a kind of backwoods savant, the variety of the styles he's playing with demonstrate a keen awareness of pop songcraft.
This DVD/CD set is a collection of all his out-of-print material, re-mastered by Tard himself. It's finally possible to hear these gems in one straight shot, sounding better than ever, without flipping over a pile of 7' platters. Mindless Self Indulgence's brilliantly named The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy collects more of the group's outré, hip-hop-tinged industrial thrash. Singer Urine's bizarre falsetto sounds like a sped-up Jello Biafra, especially on tracks like "Boomin'" and "I Hate Jimmy Page." The album's 30 songs -- which sport titles like "Dicks Are for My Friends," "Cocaine and Toupees," "Faggot," and "Royally Fucked" -- are all pretty much slight variations on the group's fast-and-shocking style. A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with the summer smash that never was, June, 1978's, "Emergency," and it is with these tracks as its benchmarks that 999 should be judged. A ferocious live band, the group harnessed every iota of their stage performance for the studio, turning in an album that zips past at the speed of light, in a blur of chant-worthy choruses and pogo-able riffs; even better, three bonus tracks round up the absent "Nasty Nasty" 45, plus a pair of period B-sides, to deliver a picture perfect portrait of 999's first year. NOFX are masters of the punk ethic of self-deprecation, and it begs the question if they truly realize the mark they have made on the history of modern hardcore. After 18 years, the band that sums up its musical prowess humbly as "good," releases a staggering collection of B-sides, compilation tracks, and rare cuts (many of which were previously long out-of-print in their original 7" pressings).
A cover of the Seymour Simons standard "All Of Me" sets the tone for this collection, and boasts an attitude that really says it all; this band lives for doing things their way.
