Tom Tom Club Tom Tom Club CD (1981)
Wall-E Soundtrack buy CD music Following the release of the Talking Heads' fourth album, REMAIN IN LIGHT, the band's husband-and-wife rhythm section, drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth, opted to record tracks in the Caribbean on the invitation of Islands Records founder Chris Blackwell, thus the Tom Tom Club was born. Joined by Talking Heads touring guitarist Adrian Belew, guitarist Monte Brown, percussionist Steven Stanley, and Weymouth's sisters, Laura and Lani, on background vocals, Frantz and Weymouth crafted a highly rhythmic, groove-laden album that incorporated world music (most obviously on the buoyant, African-tinged "L'Elephant") and hip-hop (the playful "Wordy Rappinghood," a kindred spirit to Blondie's "Rapture"). Of course, the 1981 album's most shining moment proved to be the hit single, "Genius of Love," a vibrant dance-floor classic that has been sampled ad infinitum. Issued the same year as David Byrne and Brian Eno's MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS, TOM TOM CLUB was the fun and free-spirited counterpart to that experimental and cerebral outing, revealing that the Taking Heads could making fascinating music even when fragmented.

Thievery Corporation Richest Man in Babylon CD (2002)
Wall-E Soundtrack album for sale Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, the Washington, D.C. duo better known as Thievery Corporation, continue to refine their previously established style on THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON. For their third proper album of new material, they continue to mine a mellow electronica groove with jazz, pop, and world music flavorings mixed in among the expected reggae, soul, and funk elements. The title tune and "The State of the Union" focus heavily on the reggae aspects of Thievery Corporation's sound, while "Liberation Front" bears more of an acid-jazz feel. The closing track "Resolution" (along with a few others) is more in line with that ethereal trip-hop flow for which Hilton and Garza are perhaps best known. On the graphics side, a great deal of time appears to have been put in to the package here, which includes a thick and evocative photo booklet whose striking, occasionally off-kilter images provide an excellent visual equivalent to the music.
Rob Garza and Eric Hilton consider it their most introspective work to date. Existing somewhere between rock, dub, psychedelic, Latin, and electronic music, this 2002 album finds the duo elevating their signature sound with more contemplative and thought-provoking songwriter. The jewelcase is housed in a slipcase along with a 40-page black & white photo booklet. Eighteenth Street Lounge. 2002.

Wall-E Soundtrack CD music Performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski.
Leopold Strokowski's 1940 recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the movie Fantasia were landmarks on several counts. Apart from attempting to bring classical music to the masses in the theater, the soundtrack album -- which came out on LP in the 1950s -- was one of the earliest stereo recordings, featuring some of the most enjoyable high-fidelity sound of the period and boasting impeccable performances (even if the pieces were mostly re-edited and shortened). Apart from his reputation as a fiercely independent musical personality, Stokowski was also a showman with very few peers, and his careful yet extroverted performances of these pieces (including Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and the summary of Beethoven's "Pastorale Symphony") introduced many listeners not blessed with classical music educations to these pieces for the first time. (As the film wasn't a success on its initial release, there weren't millions of such listeners, but at least many tens of thousands.) The performances on Fantasia retain their luster in the modern era, with sound clean enough that they do not need to be considered "historical" recordings. The recordings are also infinitely preferable to the mid-'80s attempt to re-score Fantasia with a modern orchestra and modern sound -- not only did the latter fall considerably short of what people expected, but the interpretations were flaccid and dull by comparison with the originals. ~ Bruce Eder
Recording information: 1940.

Beguiled DVD (1971)
Wall-E Soundtrack buy CD music This bizarre Gothic Western, made the year before Clint Eastwood's equally eerie PLAY MISTY FOR ME, makes one wonder what was happening in the actor's personal life during this period. Set in the Deep South during the Civil War, the film stars Eastwood as John McBurney, a severely wounded soldier who is near death when discovered by a teenage girl. She takes him to the mansion that serves as her boarding school, where he slowly begins to regain his health under the care of headmistress Martha Farnsworth (Geraldine Page) and the dozen or so girls who live there. As McBurney gets better, he begins to charm the girls, all of whom are starved for affection because of the war's claim on their men. At length, powerful undercurrents of jealousy saturate the atmosphere as the girls, and even the headmistress, begin to vie for McBurney's attention. He first becomes involved with one of the oldest of the girls, Edwina Dabney (Elizabeth Hartman), but ultimately finds it difficult to resist the charms of some of her schoolmates. His promiscuity becomes his undoing. A fascinating mixture of eroticism and horror, THE BEGUILED is perhaps the most uncharacteristic of either Don Siegel's or Eastwood's career; its evocation of castration anxiety provides an interesting angle on the dark side of these tough-guy filmmakers. Eastwood give one of his best performances, and Page and the ill-starred Elizabeth Hartman are superb.

Original Soundtrack Dark Knight CD (2008)
Wall-E Soundtrack songs Loaded with high energy and high tension, the follow-up to the 2005 blockbuster BATMAN BEGINS is sure to thrill even the skeptics. Once again the music is handled by the dynamic duo of Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. Each composer's individual skill selects one aspect of the dark duality of the Batman character; Zimmer's action-savvy boisterousness is mostly tempered by Howard's brooding, introverted theming.
