The Doobie Brothers shuffled personnel a bit after their debut album, changing bass players and adding a second drummer. For whatever reason, this sophomore effort was the one that kicked off their long streak as one of the most popular bands in America. The basic sound of TOULOUSE STREET isn't really all that different from the Doobies' previous effort. There's a similar mix of acoustic guitars, gospel harmonies, and overall post-hippie mellowness.
This time out, however, the songs have hooks as well as grooves. TOULOUSE STREET produced the chugging and eminently infectious "Listen to the Music," the Doobies' breakthrough hit single. Other highpoints include the anthemic "Rockin' Down the Highway," which quickly became a radio staple; a considerably juiced-up version of the Byrds' "Jesus is Just Alright;" the lovely, CSNY-inspired title song; and a nice cover--with horns--of Sonny Boy Williamson's blues classic "Don't Start Me Talkin'." Producer Ted Templeman gave the band a cleaner, harder-edged sound, and helped bring the band's unique mix of roots rock, gospel, country, jazz, bluegrass, R&B, swamp boogie, and pop hooks into perfect focus. Toulouse Street
$6.29 CAPTAIN AND ME found the Doobie Brothers boasting three strong vocalists, two expert guitarists, and a brace of rhythmic drummers, refining a sound that crossed AM pop-rock, soul-tinged R&B, country-folk, jazzy gospel, and strong musicianship. The result burst the band into national prominence. Traces of Moby Grape, whom the group adored, can be heard in their vibrant harmonies and flowing hooklines, but THE CAPTAIN AND ME showed an act of singular purpose.
The effervescent urgency propelling the percolating groover "Long Train Running" and the leaner rock of "China Grove" into the US singles charts is apparent on every selection. In addition to the band's gorgeous layered harmonies and twin guitar arpeggios, THE CAPTAIN AND ME features the band's strongest and most consistent set of songs. Patrick Simmons's ...

Toulouse Street
$6.59 WHAT WERE ONCE VICES ARE NOW HABITS, the follow-up to the Doobies' massive commercial breakthrough, THE CAPTAIN AND ME, boasts one of the great album titles in rock history. The album also features a strong bunch of songs in the same stylistic vein as its immediate predecessors. The big hit here, of course, is "Black Water," an infectious piece of jazzy folk rock with a killer a cappella gospel-chorus section. "Song to See You Through" is the Doobies' version of a '60s soul ballad, ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the ...

$9.69 Washington D.C.'s Urban Verbs are often cited as a pretentious new wave band from a town that would later help birth hardcore punk, but the truth is they deserve better than that. Urban Verbs were one of the first significant new wave acts to emerge from the nation's capitol, they helped to found what would become one of the city's finest rock venues, the 9:30 Club, and their best work was genuinely striking and distinctive. 1981's Early Damage, the group's second and final album, is a compelling collection of cool but dramatic soundscapes fueled by Robert Goldstein's guitar work, which could shapeshift into smooth, jagged, or impressionistic patterns at will. Goldstein had a more than able musical foil in keyboard player Robin Rose, and if her synthesizer patterns sound ...

$14.79 The story of: BLUE STATUE BLUE STATUE is a project started in 1996 by Dion L. Williams, an artist who composes, performs, records and produces his own material.Dion started writing poetry and lyrics in high school, though it\'s the acoustic guitar where he finds most of the inspiration for his material, and is influenced by bands and artists such as The Cure, The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., The Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley.Dion was originally the songwriter and vocalist for the band THE WONDERFIELD in the early 90\'s, an alternate rock band from PIETERMARITZBURG, which was made up of: Dion (Vocals); his two younger brothers, Mark A. Williams (Bass) and Clinton Williams (Guitar); Ron Wartmann (Guitar); Jacques van den Bergh (drums); and later Steven J. (Guitar), and Roots Cele (Drums). Because of other commitments the band split and Dion went on to start his own solo project, BLUE STATUE. Shane Nel joined as guitarist, with Mark A. Williams on bass guitar. The position of drummer was filled by whoever was available at the time, e.g. Jacques, Roots or occasionally Rob Marais, who now graces the stage with THE HAIRY LEGGED LENTYL EATERS.After many live performances in and around Kwazulu-Natal, BLUE STATUE recorded thirteen songs with Rob at SIGNATURE STUDIOS, and in October 1997 released a collection of acoustic songs, called “WASTED WORDS”. The title track from the album received airplay in December 1997 on East Coast Radio. The experience Dion gained while in the studio, and with new equipment supplied by R&B Music (Pietermaritzburg), motivated him to write some of his best material to date, including the songs: Screaming Son, Secrets, Truth About You and Vacuum Six.The band lineup continued to change, putting an enormous strain on Dion and his management, and eventually the project BLUE STATUE went into hibernation, while Dion continued composing and performing live with various other rock outfits in Pietermaritzburg. Now ten years after recording “WASTED WORDS”, and with the management services of Arthur Key from NITERIDER PROMOTIONS, BLUE STATUE is back and has recorded another 18 tracks at LANTERN STUDIOS, with a fresh new styling and groove. All acoustic and electric bass lines on the tracks are composed and performed by Mark A. Williams.Dion has experimented with and applied new production techniques which have inspired and produced a greater level of maturity and creativity from this talented composer. He is taking full advantage of the digital age of drum and instrument samples to decorate and drive his acoustic framework and alternate vocals. These tools have given BLUE STATUE’s electro/acoustic rock new direction, providing more variety, depth and consistency. Ten songs have been remixed for release ...
