Dead Can Dance's TOWARD THE WITHIN is a live album, but don't let that persuade you not to buy it. Most of the tracks here (11 of 15) are not on any of the group's studio records, and all of them are flat-out spectacular. This is one of the band's best albums, live or otherwise.
The opener, "Rakim," condenses everything that makes Dead Can Dance a brilliant band into six minutes. Musically, it features an instrumental introduction with a dense, droning backing while a bouzouki skitters across the surface and, eventually, a strikingly expressive percussion section. Vocally, it features Brendan Perry singing in a language that you are unlikely to know, Lisa Gerrard's fabulous voice yodeling in a way you have never heard, and a last verse, in English, delivered in Perry gorgeous, resonant tones. If this doesn't sell you on this band, nothing will. The best track here, though, is Perry's amazing singer/songwriter turn on "American Dreaming," which stands out like a blast of cool breeze on a hot day when its simplicity is compared to the band's denser material. Of all the DCD albums, this one shows the group stretching the farthest, and succeeding all the way.
SACD Hybrid Remastered CD of the 1994 album Toward The Within is the only official live album of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's Dead Can Dance. It contains 15 songs, of which only four appeared on their previous albums, and two of which were later re-recorded and included on Lisa Gerrard's first solo album, The Mirror Pool. The others previously existed only in live performances and unofficial bootlegs, but were not officially released until Toward the Within. Along with Perry and Gerrard were a number of musicians who had performed with them on other occasions.14 tracks.
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard (vocals, yang ch'in, percussion), Brendan Perry (vocals, guitar, percussion, whistle, Irish bouzouki), Robert Perry (uillean pipes, Irish bouzouki, whistle, percussion), Andrew Claxton (keyboards), John Bonnar (keyboards, vocals, percussion), Lance Hogan (bass, guitar, percussion, vocals), Ronan O'Snodaigh (percussion, vocals).NME (Magazine) (2/18/95, p.51) - 7 - Very Good - "...an exquisitely frosty live document. Lisa Gerrard's sometimes wordless excursions into the netherworld are perfectly countered by Brendan Perry's internal excavations of emotion..." Toward The Within Songs | 1. | Rakim |

Toward The Within album
$21.35 Having crafted such a singular sound for himself both in Dire Straits and as a respected film composer, it's gratifying to hear that Mark Knopfler's consummate musicianship has only gotten better on what is only his second solo album in a career that began in the mid- '70s. For SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA, Knopfler once again looks to America for inspiration, starting with the stirring title track that draws from Thomas Pynchon's fictionalized account of English ...

Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.

| | Dead Can Dance Spleen And Ideal CD (1985) Remastered; Sacd Hybrid
Toward The Within album
$18.05 SPLEEN AND IDEAL is a profoundly different sounding record than its self-titled predecessor. It seems to have been recorded in a completely different time, perhaps by the 14th century ancestors of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, if they had access to electric guitars and synthesizers. The tracks are all stately, muted affairs that actually managed to evoke the images that their titles suggest--the best example of this is the brittle, gorgeous "Circumradiant Dawn," which sounds like a hymn written to accompany Earth's very first sunrise.
Among the standouts here are "De Profundis (Out of the Depths of Sorrow)," where Lisa Gerrard's voice soars above the haunting, sustained chords of the music; "Ascension," with its moody trombones and a cavernous echo so deep you can feel the space around you expanding and contracting; ...

Toward The Within CD music
$17.95 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Dead Can Dance's SPIRITCHASER continues the band's interest in widening their musical (and lyrical) palate. This album contains Haitian, Native American, and modern dance influences, and even clips a reference from a George Harrison song ("Within You, Without You") on "Indus." The record's sleeve contains a brief discussion of how music is the expression of souls contained within instruments. This theme is oddly, though probably not accidentally, in keeping with the fact that SPIRITCHASER was the last Dead Can Dance record--following it, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard parted ways to pursue individual careers.
Standouts include the spectacular, and lengthy (at around 10 minutes), "Song of the Stars," a section of which is sung in Haitian; the aforementioned "Indus," built on Gerrard's amazing voice; and "Song of the Dispossessed," in which the narrator, through Perry's resonant voice, laments the loss of the old world to the influence of Christianity. The best track here, though, is "The Snake and the Moon," which ...
