| | Doug Wimbish Cinemasonics CD Doug Wimbish Discography of CDs
Doug Wimbish's long-awaited second solo album, following 1999's 'Trippy Notes for Bass'. He recruits many big musical mates, including Shara Nelson (Massive Attack), Adrian Sherwood, Bernard Fowler, Bernie Worrell, Skip McDonald, Keith Leblanc, and Wil Calhoun. 'CinemaSonics' is filled with his virtuosity, electronics, and signature ambient sound, but also showcases his melodic, lyrical, and compositional skills. From horn-rich 'James Bond' orchestration, to 1970s Superfly funk, urban Beatstreet vibes, and darker 'Miami Vice' moods, 'CinemaSonics' is a comprehensive and stylish musical document. RIYL Barry Adamson/ONU Sound.

Cinemasonics album
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied ...

| | Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played CD (2005)
Cinemasonics music CDs
$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows Paul to shine in an instrumental setting, as on the slinky rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and the funky "69 Freedom Special."

| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Cinemasonics CD music
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Victoria" -- and they're mercifully absent from the slower tunes, ...

| | Birtwistle-Harvey-Alvarez-Mira Calix Recovery-Discovery: 40 Years Of Surround Electroni CD (2008)
Cinemasonics album
$18.19 This hybrid CD / Audio DVD provides the first surround sound release of major British electronic music works by four composers of different generations, spanning 40 years of music history. These works where intended as quadraphonic or surround pieces but had never been released in such a spatial format until now. Sir Harrison Birtwistle's piece "Chronometer" (24â42â) is his only major electronic piece. Birtwistle (°1934) composed this piece with the help of Peter Zinovieff at the EMS Studios (home of the VCS3 synthesiser made famous by Pink Floyd and others). It turned out that the original 1970 master tape had all but disappeared (even the composer or his publisher did not know if the piece survived) so this release is a real recovery operation of an important piece of UK cultural heritage. After a careful restoration at the famous London Abbey Road Studios, Chronometer revives in its full sonic glory.Jonathan Harvey (°1939) made his âMortuos Plango, Vivos Vocoâ (9â07â) studio piece at the IRCAM studios in Paris in 1980. Based on the bell sounds of Winchester cathedral and the sound of his sonâs voice singing a text found on one of the bells, this piece is not only a quintessential part of the British electronic repertoire, but also a beautiful tribute to the British choral tradition of its many cathedrals, and the bell ringing so often associated with them. This is the first surround release of this important work.Although Javier Alvarez (°1956) is a Mexican composer, it is his electronic piece âTemazcalâ, composed and made as a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Music in London in 1984, that is perhaps his most successful to date, and one of the party pieces of the âlive+electronicâ repertoire worldwide. The piece (8â03â) for surround tape and live maracas, was inspired by earlier electronic works by the likes of Stephen Montague and Trevor Wishart, and shows an ear-opening eclecticism and a fresh sound that even today sounds new and exciting. For this release percussionist Joby Burgess made a new high resolution surround recording of the live maracas part.Mira Calix (aka. Chantal Passamonte, °1969) was born in Durban, South Africa but lives ...
