Kiltyclogher is a small village that lies on the Leitrim/Fermanagh border, with a population of about 150 people. From this area a unique cluster of traditional Irish fiddle players has emerged over the last 80 years. Within a Mile of Kilty is a collection of recordings by these musicians from the past 40 years, collected by David Lennon. The musicians on this album are six exceptionally talented fiddle players, and include three members of the well-known Lennon family, Ben, Charlie and Maurice. Ben and Charlie, brothers, were brought up in Kiltyclogher, and their names are known far and wide in traditional music circles. They have both recorded several albums, and in addition Charlie has received widespread critical acclaim as a composer. Maurice is Ben's son, and he was a founder member of Stockton's Wing in 1977. Séamus Quinn is from Derrygonnelly, in Co. Fermanagh, and both his father and grandfather came from Kiltyclogher. Séamus' grandfather was a well-known fiddler and was regarded by many as the most outstanding of his time. Brian Rooney was born near Kiltyclogher, and his father played fiddle and flute. He emigrated to London in the 1940s, where he became deeply involved in the traditional Irish music scene, playing with the group Sliabh Luachra. John Gordon was from Cashel, Co. Fermanagh. He was a very well-known musician, and featured in broadcasts on both BBC and RTÉ Radio. Sadly, John passed away in 2002. There is accompaniment on the album from Altan's Ciarán Curran on cittern, Beginish's Noel O'Grady on bouzouki, Frank Kilkelly on guitar and Gabriel McArdle on concertina. Within A Mile Of Kilty songs
$42.05 Four years after their disappointing major label debut, 1998's FREAKONICA, Girls Against Boys return with YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE, their first album for the emo stalwart Jade Tree Records and a much more successful marriage of pop sheen and the punky grind of their earliest recordings. FREAKONICA tilted too far into the mainstream and ended up sounding like Garbage with a male singer and less interesting hooks. However, YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE starts from the same Fugazi/Superchunk-oriented guitar rock as the band's earlier albums (especially apparent on "300 Looks for the Summer") but adds a little Jesus and Mary Chain-style (DARKLANDS-era) pop sense to songs like "BFF" and "Miami Skyline." There's also a subtle but effective use of electronics and loops throughout. The best tracks, "Tweaker" and "All the Rage," are simultaneously powerfully noisy and hook-filled and accessible, making YOU CAN'T FIGHT WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE one of the most satisfying and enjoyable albums of the band's career.
After breaking free from their major-label contract, Girls Against Boys jumped headfirst into the underground, signing with Jade Tree and enthusiastically working on their next release. You Can't Fight What You Can't See is the result of four years fighting with corporate types and watching the alternative music scene shift from punk-pop and electronica to rap-rock and overdramatic post-grunge. To say that they have something to prove would be an understatement, and this album delivers their impending reaction to their environment. Everything is still in place, from the funky drumming of Alexis Fleisig to the cool vocals of Scott McCloud. And when the band is feeling it, tracks like "Tweaker" throb with an intensity that only this lineup of musicians can possibly muster. But a little of the major-label sheen still lingers on this recording; take "Miami Skyline" as an example. The song sounds similar to a John Spencer track ...
