Cest Magnifique
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar Zamini. It's a heady mixture all around, and beautifully produced by ECM founder Manfred Eicher once again. The winning message is that these cultures mingled and fertilized each other in the past and will surely do so again.

| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Cest Magnifique
$13.09 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not ...
| | Bebo & Cigala Lagrimas Negras CD (2004)
Cest Magnifique
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata Güines, and El ...

| | Mariza Terra CD (2008) Bonus Track
Cest Magnifique
$13.49 Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. It does so relatively subtly, and she keeps her base pretty firmly in fado (witness the glorious "Ja Me Deixou"). But the inclusion of a standard like "Smile," which closes the album and has her singing in English, is evidence of the move to broaden her appeal, as is the lushness of the arrangements, much fuller than she's used in the studio in the past. Her duet with Paris on "Beijo de Saudade" is a highlight, and the voices play off each other gloriously, hers pure and clear, his gruff and harsh. Ultimately, the question is whether it all works, and it does, because it doesn't try to do too ...
| | Spinners Live! CD (1975)
Cest Magnifique
$10.39 Originally issued on vinyl and cassette, the Spinners' Live is much better on CD. The original was a foldout double-sleeve job with two vinyl disks. The worst tune, their campy rendition of George and Ira Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm," is track one. Maybe in person they spiced it with fancy choreography, but without any visuals, it's just blah. For some strange reason they omitted "I'll Be Around," which would have been a far superior opening track than the Gershwins' dinosaur. The excitement unfolds with "I've Got to Make It on My Own" from their latest studio album (at that point), New and Improved. They perform it with the ferocity of a new single; it wasn't, but the inspiring song should have been. Then comes siesta time again via Thom Bell and Linda Creed's unusual tempo "Living Just a Little, Laughing Just a Little"; the best way to look at that death march is to view it as the quiet before the storm of chartbusters, including "Then Came You," a theatrical "Sadie," and the swaying "How Could I Let You Get Away" (featuring imitations of Al Green, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding). They bust into "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," then traipse into a longer medley imitating everybody from Tom Jones to the Marvelettes. Philippe Wynne literally cries the lyrics in the icy ...
