| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Legrand
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Legrand
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches ...

$16.45 Inner Urge:Drummer Mark Sweetman pursues a spiritual quest.By Yonah Korngold His sound is raw and drenched with emotion. With this spirit, Mark Sweetman carries the torch passed to himfrom the days when John Coltrane redirected his life on a spiritualquest after quitting heroin cold turkey by locking himself in hisroom on N. 33rd Street with nothingbut cigarettes and water.Since these daysthe number of jazz musiciansthat truly understand what it means to be a jazzmusician is growing scarcer than mice in a catpound. Refreshingly, Mark Sweetman, the Canadian-borndrummer, has yet to divert fromthe spiritually enriched sound, soul and life thathe discovered inhis childhood.Born in Toronto,Sweetman recalls a vibrant jazzscene where he would spend night after night in theback of a jazz club called Bourbon St., sipping on icewater, soaking up the energy and melting away withthe vibrant sound. There he witnessed tremendousacts like Bill Evans and Chet Baker who taught himwhat it meant to play with everything from the insideout. Perhaps his greatest influence came while witnessingguitarist Sonny Greenwich roar deep with atone no other guitarist can duplicate. In Sweetman, there is a lot of Greenwich. It is apparent inhis spir-itualmission and the joy and intensity that surroundhis music. Yet Greenwich was not theonly power that awak-ened Sweetman's musical sense. There was also Sweetman's drum teacher whomhe paired up with in Toronto when he was 18.Sweetman describes howhis teacher was, “totally into Coltrane, Elvin, Miles, and Tony Williams.” It is in these drum lessons thatSweetman was taught more than just drums but “lifeclass” where lessons about jazz theory soon became“life lessons.” In these pivotal moments Sweetmanlearned that the first rule of music was to never beafraid of producing one's own sound.Sweetman followed this jazz guruon the road to Philadelphia where he spent yearsbuilding up the spiritual sound inside of him that finally unleasheditself in 1997 with his debut album, Inspire d. As thetitle emphasizes, the seven tracks on the album areproducts of years of built upmusical stimulation.“The urgencyto put out my own music was sogreat that I didn't have a choice,” says Sweetman. “Ihad spirituality in there that needed to get out for years.”With a line up that includes such talents as RalphBowen, Dan ...
