Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations. If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning. Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Mortal Engines (aka Don Avera) has been making music since 1994 with the initial cassette release of "Deus Ex Machina" and with contributions to various CD complilations (most notably "A Storm of Drones"-Asphodel, 1996), and collaborations (Noisettes vs. Mortal Engines).Compostion for Pressure Vessel began in mid 2006 in preparation for a spot as a performer at the Playa Cafe for the Burning Man Festival later, that September. Other performances followed (like Decompression:SF...a Burning Man related event in San Francisco the following October) providing further input and inspiration for the tracks on the CD.Every song on the disc was the result of learning new methods and continually changing the compositional technique to each individual track.
