Many jazz purists need a serious reality check when it comes to what they expect from jazz vocalists. Even in the 21st century, jazz purists continue to insist that jazz singers who grew up in a rock/R&B era -- and that includes Gen-X and Gen-Y as well as the baby boomers -- should remain untouched by rock or R&B and avoid any popular music that didn't come from Tin Pan Alley. But such thinking is silly and antiquated; it's only natural that some jazz-oriented vocalists are going to have non-jazz influences, and You're Gonna Hear from Me is a perfect example of a vocal album that is jazz-oriented without being the work of a jazz purist. Cathy Rocco is a gritty and bluesy yet introspective singer whose influences include Dinah Washington, Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson (the singer who worked with Cannonball Adderley, not Wilson of Heart), Marlena Shaw and Carmen McRae; jazz is Rocco's primary direction, but soul, blues and funk have clearly left their mark on her as well. And she is as expressive on Tin Pan Alley war horses like "Autumn Leaves" and "There Will Never Be Another You" as she is on Aretha Franklin's "Daydreaming," Bill Withers' "Hello Like Before," Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" and the Stevie Wonder-associated "For Once in My Life," which she transforms into a torch ballad. The big-voiced Rocco's outlook is "rhythm & jazz" (to borrow jazz critic Scott Yanow's term), but she isn't quite as much of a belter as a full-fledged R&B singer might be. Although not for jazz purists, this 2008 release is easily recommended to those who like their vocal jazz laced with a generous dose of soul and blues. ~ Alex HendersonJazzTimes (p.101) - "Her 'Tea for Two' is petal-soft, and she swings 'Autumn Leaves' without ever diminishing the lyric's poignancy."

5 stars WOW!!! Now this is a winner!
Cathy Rocco's new album, You're Gonna Hear From Me, is a winner. While each song captures the essence of her love of jazz, her orininality adds a special flavor bringing newness to some familiar songs. Cathy's scatting has the clarity of a finely tuned instrument and puts her up there with the best of them. Love to hear more of it....Best of luck my friend, Linda Benvenue

Tell All Your Friends
Taking Back Sunday Tell All Your Friends CD  (2002)

You're Gonna Hear From Me
CD $10.09  4.9 stars
Emo-Rock From Long Island Talking Back Sunday: Ed Reyes, Mark O'Connell, Shaun Cooper, John Nolan, Adam Lazzara.
Engineers: Erin Farley, Tim Gilles, Arun Venkatesh.
Tell All Your Friends is quite reminiscent of the Movielife's This Time Next Year. This is quite understandable when one realizes that one of the members of Taking Back Sunday used to be in the Movielife. Unfortunately, although there are a few variations, the ability of this band to sound so blatantly like their fellow Long Island comrades is almost their undoing. Vocally, Taking Back Sunday sounds very close to the Canterbury Effect, while musically there are times where they're a bit more rockin' than the Movielife in that they have cultivated punk, hardcore, emo, and pop and hybridized it better. It's quite upbeat and very danceable, thus making it fun and interesting. Yet at the same time it's nowhere near to being original ...

Shelly Manne My Fair Lady CD  (1956) (Import) Japan; Reissue

You're Gonna Hear From Me
CD $31.55
Music composed by Frederick Loewe. Lyrics written by Alan Jay Lerner.
Personnel: Shelly Manne (drums); Andre Previn (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass).
Recorded at Contemporary's Studio, Los Angeles, California on August 17, 1956. Originally released on Contemporary (7527). Includes liner notes by Lester Koenig.
Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
MY FAIR LADY, the beloved album from Shelly Manne, returns in this remastered rerelease and features the songs "Rain In Spain" and "I Could Have Danced All Night."
At a time when digital recording was in its infancy and there was a vogue for having opera singers "cross over" to pop by making albums of Broadway show music, conductor John Mauceri, a master of the crossover field, undertook this "DDD" (digitally recorded, mixed, and mastered) studio cast version of Lerner & Loewe's My Fair Lady with Kiri Te Kanawa in the leading role of "flower girl turned lady" Eliza Doolittle and well-respected British actor Jeremy Irons opposite her as the chauvinistic elocutionist Henry Higgins, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the supporting performers were the venerable British actor John Gielgud as Higgins' friend Colonel Pickering and tenor Jerry Hadley as Eliza's paramour, Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The chief attributes of the recording are the various additions to the score (as compared to the original Broadway and London cast LPs and the original soundtrack album), possible due to the increased length of 70 minutes, and Irons' spirited performance. Unlike Rex Harrison, who talked his way through the stage and film productions, Irons introduces a certain limited amount of singing here and there, and he manages ...
