The electronic pioneer returns with 2 complete shows on DVD and CD in one deluxe package with extras that include a lecture at the Berklee School of Music.
Thomas Dolby was a British synth-pop hero of the 1980s, bringing classy craftsmanship, musical sophistication, and yes, even a touch of funk to the proceedings. Although he stopped making new music in the mid-'90s, THE SOLE INHABITANT finds the tech-pop auteur alive and well in the 21st century, performing a passel of his classics. Working in a one-man-band scenario made possible by his technological mastery, he turns out almost shockingly full-sounding versions of such gems as the groove-monster "Hyperactive," the wistful "Europa and the Pirate Twins," and of course, his signature smash, "She Blinded Me With Science."
Personnel: Thomas Dolby (vocals, keyboards, programming).

| | King Crimson Vroom Vroom CDs (2001) (Import)
The Sole Inhabitant CD music
$22.29 Recorded live at Metropolitan Theater, Mexico City, Mexico and Longacre Theater, New York, New York on August 2-4, 1996 and November 20-25, 1995. Includes liner notes by Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn.
From the mid-'90s on, a steady stream of archival live King Crimson recordings began to appear, released by Crimson guitarist/leader Robert Fripp as the backbone of his independent cottage industry. This thicket of albums can be an intimidating proposition for the uninitiated, even though each one bears its own distinctive charms. For historical context, let's note that VROOOM VROOOM's two discs feature material from two separate stints in 1995 and '96 during which the band was exploring the "double quartet" concept. This format added second drummer Pat Mastelotto and "touch guitar" player (its nearest relative being Tony Levin's Chapman Stick) to the four-man lineup that ...
| | Peter Green Reaching The Cold 100 CD (2003)
The Sole Inhabitant music CDs
$12.45 Initial copies include a bonus disc containing studio versions of 4 live favorites.
Reaching the Cold 100 is the final Peter Green Splinter Group recording. It is polished, warm-toned British blues-rock in a mode that literally puts anything Eric Clapton's done in the last 20 years to shame. Peter Stroud, Nigel Watson and Roger Cotton composed most of the material here separately; yet they have figured out a way to sound like a single songwriter reflecting Green's voice and musical persona. This record has a ton of spiritual themes attached to it, many of them spooky -- and not in that clichéd way people have been imitating Robert Johnson in either. Whether they are mid-tempo, minor-key rockers like "Needs Must the Devil Drives," the slower, Chicago-styled "Spiritual Thief," that walks the line between blues and soul, or the downright hunted "Dangerous Man," that theme underlies much here. Other standouts on this set are the snarling, funky "Cool Down," the smoldering "Look Out for Yourself," the soul-blues, of "When Somebody Cares," and the minimal blues funk in "Smile." As a bonus, ...
| | David Crosby Crosby * Nash CDs (2004)
The Sole Inhabitant songs
$15.89 HIGHLIGHTS is a single-disc distillation of David Crosby and Graham Nash's 2004 double-disc set CROSBY/NASH, subtracting seven songs (and combining the brief acoustic fragments "Grace" and "Jesus of Rio" into a single track) to make a total of 12. Cutting the nearly 80-minute set by over a third has strengthened the remaining songs immensely, showcasing gems like the sumptuous "Lay Me Down," which would have fit beautifully on any of the duo's 1970s albums, and Crosby's topical rant "They Want It All." The backing band is led by Crosby's son, James Raymond, who also wrote several songs, and features longtime collaborators like guitarist Jeff Pevar, bassist Lee Sklar, and drummer Russ Kunkel (whose son Nathaniel Kunkel co-produced with Crosby and Nash), giving HIGHLIGHTS a musical and personal link back to the duo's heyday.
In the late 1990s, after surviving serious health problems, David Crosby experienced something of an artistic rebirth by teaming with his long-lost son, keyboardist/songwriter ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Count Talent & The Originals CD (1978)
The Sole Inhabitant album
$15.15 Mike Bloomfield--perhaps best known for his work with Paul Butterfield and Bob Dylan--also had a successful solo career and released several potent collections of Chicago blues. This 1978 release (reissued in 2006) was recorded just three years before Bloomfield's drug addiction claimed his life, although as a player, band leader, and writer, he is still in fine form. This album, featuring an interesting rendition of Leo Sayer's hit song "When I Need You," is ...
| | Kansas Two For The Show CDs (1978)
The Sole Inhabitant CD music
$15.89 By the late '70s, Kansas had not only established themselves as one of America's most adventurous progressive rock bands; they even had a number of Top 20 hits to their credit. And as they finally paused for a breath after a string of five increasingly successful studio albums, it made perfect sense to fill the gap with a live album. Originally released as a double-vinyl set, Two for the Show is a sprawling, mind-boggling affair that juggles such overblown epics as "Journey from Mariabronn" and the self-explanatory "Magnum Opus" with mandatory ...
