| | Jazz: A Film by Ken Burns 2 - The Gift (1917-1924)
Anamorph review
For the third part of his American Trilogy--following THE CIVIL WAR and BASEBALL--Ken Burns takes on the "that most American of art forms": jazz. The 10-part, 19-hour film begins with the music's roots in post-Civil War New Orleans and concludes roughly a century later. The story focuses not only on the personalities and events that helped define the music but also on ...

Canadian director Guy Maddin (THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD) takes his quasi-documentary strain of filmmaking to a satisfying, and deliriously inventive, extreme with MY WINNIPEG. The film follows Maddin, who narrates and plays the character of Darcy Fehr, as he tries to escape the Canadian city of Winnipeg. Maddin grew up in Winnipeg and spent his entire life there. The city seems to be casting a magnetic hold over him, so he decides to film his way out. He moves a cast of actors into his childhood home, asking them to recreate pivotal moments from his upbringing. Here the family gathers to undertake mundane chores and to watch a TV show named "Ledge Guy." The show stars Maddin's mother as a woman who tries to stop her son from committing suicide in each episode. Maddin couples these scenes with a warped history of Winnipeg, which include stories of a legendary ...

$10.49 Though director Julian Jarrold's adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel BRIDESHEAD REVISITED spans decades and continents, it's a taut film that never drags and can excite contemporary audiences. Matthew Goode (MATCH POINT) stars as lower-class Londoner Charles Ryder, an aspiring artist who is beginning his studies in history at Oxford in the 1920s. A chance encounter with dandyish aristocrat Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw, PERFUME) changes the course of his life. The two embark on a close, intense friendship that is further complicated by the introduction of Sebastian's beautiful sister Julia (Hayley Atwell, CASSANDRA'S DREAM) and his overbearing, extremely religious mother, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson). BRIDESHEAD REVISITED follows Charles from the carefree '20s through the ...

$14.54 Brian Cox (THE BOURNE SUPREMACY) stars in this festival favorite as a man desperate to escape prison. But in this thriller, it's not just about freedom from the bars; the man needs to see his daughter before she dies from an illness. Joined by a group of his fellow prisoners, THE ESCAPIST makes his break from his cell in a fascinating and thought-provoking way.
There is a long tradition of films about prison escapes, such that any new venture into the subject is compelled to add some form of innovation to the well-known narrative elements. The audience expects to see a motley crew of cons discern a subtle seam in the prison’s security, which they then exploit with an ingenious combination of resourcefulness and subterfuge, using handmade trinkets to chisel through the walls and into the underground, which represents the darkness just before the dawn of freedom. THE ESCAPIST wraps this familiar package with a beautiful new bow, using a unique structure and a metaphysical twist to freshen up the formulaic plot.
The opening scene, which veritably screams references to Guy Ritchie’s SNATCH, shows the felons breaking through the first barrier, and director Rupert Wyatt then alternates the thrilling depiction of the escape with earlier scenes depicting the ...

Anamorph review
$19.55 Boasting a hip-hop aesthetic and a devotion to music ranging from the 1970s to the new millennium, GUNNIN' FOR THAT #1 SPOT reveals its director's roots as a member of the Beastie Boys. Adam Yauch (AWESOME! I... SHOT THAT), the creative force behind many of the rap trio's videos, turns his attention to a basketball game in his native New York. The historic event was 2006's "Elite 24" match-up, an all-star game that drew the country's top high school talent to its most famous outdoor court, Harlem's Rucker Park. Ranging in age from 15 to 18, these players come from all over the country to demonstrate their skill. GUNNIN' FOR THAT #1 SPOT spends the first two-thirds of its running time as an energetic warm-up, introducing the gifted and hardworking players and their backgrounds. The film concludes with the actual game, which is full of enough dunks and jaw-dropping moves to impress even the most seasoned basketball fan.
While most sports films focus on underdogs, GUNNIN' FOR THAT # 1 SPOT centers on eight players who are almost assured of places in history. In fact, several of the players were picked in the 2008 NBA draft, and it's not hard to see why after watching this documentary. During several especially impressive plays, Yauch slows the camera down so the audience can see every movement. His work with music videos shows in this film's style, and GUNNIN' FOR THAT #1 SPOT has a stellar soundtrack that is exactly as good as ...
