Princess and the Frog film
$23.39 Capturing all at once the wistful emotions of early adulthood, the chaotic freedom of youth, and that uniquely wonderful boredom of summer, Greg Mottola’s coming-of-age comedy, ADVENTURELAND, splits the difference between his commercial breakthrough, SUPERBAD, and his underrated debut, THE DAYTRIPPERS. ADVENTURELAND follows recent college grad James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) as he slogs his way through summer as a games attendant at a local amusement park, where he learns about the shady goings-on of the carny’s world and is introduced to an assortment of weirdos, stoners, goons, and other lost souls. Among that last group is the angsty Em (Kristen Stewart), who captures James’s heart despite her involvement with the park bad-boy, a rocker-turned-maintenance-man (Ryan Reynolds) who seduces women with a dubious story about jamming with Lou Reed.
Though the movie has its share of vomit scenes and erection jokes, Mottola is surprisingly restrained in his use of gross-out humor (particularly given SUPERBAD’s near Shakespearean vulgarity), with much of the film’s more blatant hilarity coming courtesy of Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig as the park’s completely unhinged yet utterly in love managers. At its core, ADVENTURELAND is really nothing more than a coming-of-age story set in a colorful locale--the monotonous siren call to "Step right up!" compels after-work beer blasts, random make-out sessions, and drunken existential yearning. Yet what in any other film would be played for cheap laughs and easy smiles is here used to conjure the ineffable mystery of a summer romance. Through a mixture of pleasing performances, a nuanced script, and a brilliant soundtrack (featuring the Replacements, ...

Princess and the Frog review
$15.19 Thor Freudenthal makes his feature-film directorial debut with this adaptation of Lois Duncan’s children’s book HOTEL FOR DOGS. Sixteen-year old Andi (Emma Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Jake T. Austin), are orphans living with their foster parents (Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon), two washed-up musicians. Desperate to keep what’s left of their family together, Andi and Bruce have secretly been caring for their family dog, Friday, on the sly for the last few years. When they follow their beloved pet into an abandoned hotel and find stray dogs living there, Andi and Bruce decide to round up all the strays in the city and expand their family. With the help of Dave (Johnny Simmons) and Heather (Kyla Pratt), two teens who work at the local pet store, they transform the abandoned hotel into a canine wonderland, using young Bruce’s skills as an inventor to make an automated feeding system, doggie restrooms, and some fun amusements, such as a car-ride simulation and a fetching machine. But if Animal Control has their way, all the residents of the hotel will be taken to the pound, and it’s up to Andi and Bruce to save their new family.
This heartwarming tale reinforces the importance of family and the idea that families can come in many shapes and sizes. Although the idea itself is pretty improbable, it’s still loads of fun to see the gadgets and gizmos that Bruce creates to keep the dogs fed, in shape, and content. Roberts and Austin are believable as brother and sister, and Kudrow and Dillon are amusing as washed-up '80s rockers. Don Cheadle also appears as the compassionate social worker assigned to Andi and Bruce’s case.
Hotel for Dogs, stars Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Don Cheadle in a smart, funny comedy adventure that shows how far love and imagination can take you. When their new guardians forbid 16-year old Andi (Roberts) and her younger brother, ...

| | Csny Deja Vu DVD (2008) Widescreen; Subtitled
Princess and the Frog movie DVD
$10.05 Despite its title, CSNY DÉJÀ VU is no baby-boomer nostalgia exercise. Chronicling Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 2006 tour, the film is a not just a concert movie but an engrossing exegesis on the myriad ways that entertainers, fans, soldiers, their families, right-wing radio hosts, and red- and blue-staters alike can feel about the Iraq War. Neil Young, who had just released the scathingly anti-war album LIVING WITH WAR, asked his sometime bandmates to join him for a set combining these new songs with the quartet's topical classics. As captured here, the band not only successfully reclaims its former protest mantle but tests the viability of such music in the 2000s. One of the film's dramatic highlights is a show in Atlanta where an encore featuring Young's blunt anthem, "Let's Impeach the President," sends a large swath of the crowd to the door in disgust. The footage brings to mind Dylan in 1966, except this time the issues concern blood and oil and not electricity and folk music. To his credit, Young--whom David Crosby calls "a benevolent dictator"--probes a truly raw nerve in mainstream American entertainment. The documentary was produced and directed by Bernard Shakey--aka Young himself--but the presence of ABC News' Michael Cerre lends a credibility that pushes the film beyond the realm of self-promotion. Cerre is an admitted fan of CSNY, but as a journalist several times embedded with American G.I.s in Iraq he provides a needed insider's perspective. Politics aside, the film captures the aging quartet, warts and all. Riveting musical moments such as ripping guitar duels between Young and Stephen Stills or the ever-stellar harmonizing of Crosby and Graham Nash are humorously undercut by the image of Stills tripping over a monitor onstage. Intimate backstage footage reveals a charming camaraderie that has clearly kept this band ...
