Bear and the Bow review
Brazilian documentary filmmaker Chico Teixeira brings a refreshingly natural touch to ALICE'S HOUSE, a working class drama about personal and family betrayal. Forty-ish manicurist Alice (Carla Ribas) works long hours at the beauty parlor, only to return to a cramped Sao Paulo apartment she inhabits with her brutish husband Lindomar (Zecarlos Machado), three disrespectful sons, and her ailing mother. Struggling daily against such densely packed machismo, Alice is blind to the secrets simmering beneath her family's mundane existence. This includes her eldest son turning tricks with older men and her husband's affairs with teenage girls. Alice is soon drawn into her own web of infidelity by the reappearance of an old high school flame. As truths finally boil to the surface Alice must choose ...
| | Space Chimps DVD (2008) Full Frame; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Bear and the Bow DVD
$15.09 Circus monkey Ham III (voiced by Andy Samberg) works in a circus where he's regularly shot from a canon but he still lives in the shadow of his father's legacy (Ham I was the first chimp shot into space in 1961). A natural born rebel against authority, Ham the third is initially reluctant to go on a dangerous space mission to rescue a lost space probe, but away he goes, for lots of RIGHT STUFF-style astro-training alongside two highly prepared chimps, Luna and Titan (Cheryl Hines and Patrick Warburton). NASA's by-the-book methods jar with Ham's mischief-making of course, but once the space training ends, the mission begins, with myriad dangers along the way, including: a big-toothed monster and a run amok alien named Zartog (Jeff Daniels) whose harnessed the previous space probe for world-domination purposes, all good opportunities for Ham III to redeem himself. Despite all the fangs, parents shouldn't worry too much; not a hair on any chimp is seriously singed, and along the pratfall strewn way there's time for lessons about responsibility and realization of one's full potential. While the animation here is not quite up to Pixar level, it's still pretty and colorful, with a pleasing Candyland quality to the alien planet ...

| | Man On Wire DVD (2008) Widescreen
Bear and the Bow film
$15.55 James Marsh's dazzling, invigorating documentary MAN ON WIRE tells the story of a truly inspiring figure. In the early 1970s, a fiery young Frenchman named Philippe Petit wanted to shake up the world. When he saw the World Trade Center being built in New York City, he found his mission. Petit was a trained high wire walker, and his goal was to set up a wire between the two towers and give the world a show it could never have expected. As is often the case with these endeavors, the actual high-wire walking was the easiest part of the plan. For nearly seven years, Petit worked on the project, recruiting associates who supported him every step of the way. Finally, after eight months in New York, the day came when Petit and his cronies jumped into action. This wasn't easy. They had to find a way to sneak past security and make their way to the top of the towers with heavy equipment, at which point they had to battle the elements to install the wire. After many close scares, the time came for Petit to realize his dream--and the rest, as they say, is history. Marsh crafts MAN ON WIRE like a heist film, presenting rare and fascinating footage of the actual event alongside flawless reenactments and modern-day interviews with the participants. The result is an immersive, emotionally gratifying motion ...

| | Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
Bear and the Bow movie DVD
Bollywood director Kunal Kohli (FANAA) draws on crowd-pleasing special effects, ingratiating actors, and more than a passing familiarity with MARY POPPINS to create this engaging family film. In THODA PYAAR THODA, God (Rishi Kapoor) sends a lively, no-nonsense angel named Geeta (Rani Mukherji) to serve as nanny to four orphaned siblings living in the household of industrialist Ranbeer Tarwal (Saif Ali Khan). Ranbeer has everything--a mansion on a lake, a well-tailored wardrobe, a fashionista girlfriend (Ameesha)--but not until after the arrival of the children does he recognize the emptiness of it all. The orphans, on the other hand, are painfully aware of the hole at the center of their lives. And while Geeta can easily see what the humans need to feel complete, she also wonders what it might be like to cry.
Even in the face of individual unhappiness and family tragedy, Kohli keeps the proceedings light and sweet. Imaginative songs from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (DIL CHAHTA HAI) add to the optimistic mood. A musical sequence set in a museum showcases the world-changing possibilities of Geeta's magic, inserting the children first into a newsreel of Gandhi's march protesting the price of salt, and then into a tense standoff on the Indian-Pakistani border, where the children literally disarm ...
