It's hard to imagine why Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg was hiding behind the keyboards of Will Sheff's indie rock outfit Okkervil River. ROOK is all baroque grace and dramatic elegance, mining the near orchestral, dark caverns of chamber-pop masters such as Tindersticks. Meiburg's voice alone is a phenomenal instrument, rivalling Antony's (of Antony and the Johnsons) for its courageous delicacy, creating emotional space around the sometimes sparse instrumentation when necessary. There are also moments here that border on rousing in the vein of Arcade Fire; on tracks such as "Lost Boys," Meiburg channels David Bowie during a triumphant climax. Overall, ROOK sounds like a lost gem, overlooked in '80s vinyl bins between the Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen, that has finally found a place in an often homogenous music scene.Spin (p.116) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[C]anny tonal shifts give his introspective songs a bristling, heightened urgency." Blender (Magazine) (p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hey traffic in ornately orchestrated mini-epics powered by piano, horns, harps and Meiburg's high, piercing falsetto." Rook Review

Rook album
$13.19 This is a fine addition to the long line of early 20th century blues anthologies. Put together by noted guitarist and musicologist John Fahey, this 26-track set shows early Gospel music at its most brutal and intense. It also includes a fascinating essay by Fahey on the intricate relationship between Christian theology and blues and "social" musics in general.
Of note here are appearances by country blues legends Charley Patton and Bukka White under different names (Elder J.J. Hadley and ...
| | Mates Of State Team Boo CD (2003)
Rook CD music
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner's and Hammel's angelic vocals. Team Boo is a record that will make even the staunchest nonbelievers believe in the power of simply played, honest, and energetic pop music again. Listening to Mates of State will clear out any gloom that may be in your system in a flash and replace it with ...
| | Emmylou Harris Stumble Into Grace CD (2003)
Rook music CDs
$12.39 STUMBLE INTO GRACE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.
Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff is a worthy weapon in STUMBLE INTO GRACE's arsenal, co-writing the trenchant "Time in Babylon." Other esteemed writing partners include Daniel Lanois, ex-husband Paul Kennerly, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, but this ultimately feels like a very personal ...
| | Animal Collective Sung Tongs CD (2004)
Rook songs
$13.85 From the goofy, fluttering phrasing of "Who Could Win a Rabbit" to the lilting harmonies in "College" (which could easily be an outtake from the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), Animal Collective oozes with a starry-eyed, back-to-childhood sensibility. But like anyone's youth, SUNG TONGS is full of monsters and things that go bump in the night. The ominous backwards voices in "Visiting Friends" and the thumping tribal menace of "We Tigers" leave little doubt that ...

| | Metallica Death Magnetic Vinyl LP (2008)
Rook CD music
$21.09 The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view of the creation of Metallica's 2003 album, ST. ANGER, via the documentary SOME KIND OF MONSTER, so we know they consciously tried to keep things contemporary at that time by avoiding fleet-fingered solos and eschewing the sound of the "old" Metallica. If that hoary old term "return to form" ever applied to a rock album, though, it's ANGER's follow-up, DEATH MAGNETIC.
In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, ...
| | Iggy Pop Zombie Birdhouse Vinyl LP (1982)
Rook music CDs
$18.09 Includes a bonus disc of previously unreleased music recorded live on October 28, 1982.
With the help of Chris Stein (Blondie), Iggy Pop attempts a self-consciously eclectic musical exploration with Zombie Birdhouse. By and large, the attempts are admirable, as Iggy turns in a set of songs that range from social commentary and urban folk to bizarre poetry and philosophical ruminations. Instead of singing, Iggy alterantely raps and sings over sonic backdrops that have touches of hard rock, folk, and electronic music. It's an ambitious effort that never quite works and keeps listeners at a distance. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
On the three albums he recorded for Arista Records in the late '70s and early '80s, Iggy Pop often seemed to be going out of his way to sound like a commercially viable rock musician, or at very least someone who was not quite as strange as his public reputation led people to believe. In 1982, after Iggy's contract with Arista lapsed, he was offered the opportunity to work with Blondie mastermind Chris Stein, who not only produced Zombie Birdhouse, but originally released the album on his own short-lived Animal Records imprint, and Iggy seemed to approach the album as his opportunity to let loose with every musical and lyrical impulse that wouldn't have passed muster on the label that gave us Barry Manilow and Whitney Houston. After the perverse attempt at a dance-pop album that was Party, Zombie Birdhouse certainly seemed like the right idea; Rob DuPrey, who handled the keyboards, guitars, and programming and ...
