9 Lives album
$10.69 Despite her star having lost some of its luster in the 2000s, Whitney Houston is still regarded as a benchmark for modern singers of all stripes (from soulful divas to would-be pop idols). Almost seven years in the making, 2009's I LOOK TO YOU marks ...
| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
9 Lives CD music
$15.49 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting since it appears to follow no true rhyme or reason. Nevertheless, scattershot is still ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
9 Lives music CDs
$9.75 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous foray into playa politics.
The title track's perennially recognizable hi-hat and wah-wah guitar intro, interlocking horn/string parts, and smooth, proto-rap verses conjure the name SHAFT as surely as a snake-charmer's incantation. It also conjures the name of Isaac Hayes--the songwriter, arranger, musician, ...

| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
9 Lives CD music
$8.49 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves ...

9 Lives songs
$25.59 Part of the London "garage" scene that includes So Solid Crew, Oxide & Neutrino offer up fierce rhymes and potent beats on their full-length outing EXECUTE.
Members of the So Solid Crew (of "21 Seconds" fame), Oxide & Neutrino's Execute is the first solo release from members of the popular U.K. crew and Oxide & Neutrino's first full-length effort. As they say on the BBC, it's all 'bout the coppers, cars and hard stares (read: this is the British take on gangster). Almost in spite of all its hype as an anticipated release, Execute is a fair, but not strong, album. Oxide's production draws on the usual suspects: 2-step, garage, and American hip-hop. For his part, Neutrino fulfills his duties well enough, delivering clever lines on cracking heads and cracking safes, as well as tossing some dancehall toasts. Without doubt, taking a bullet in the leg outside a London club before the album's release helped validate his roughneck persona -- but it didn't improved his skills (read: ain't no Cannibal Ox). The first single, however, "Up Middle Finger," is a block-rocking track, complete with live crowd call and response. Why they chose to release second the being-a-rap-star-is-so-hard "Only Wanna Know U Cos Your Famous," which is a subpar explication of this thematic mainstay of the not quite famous, will forever remain a mystery. The remainder of the album is at times moving, but probably would sound better on the radio (read: lack of range). After their single ...
