Although the Wallflowers are only on hiatus and not officially broken up, the first solo album by singer and songwriter Jakob Dylan is a near total change from the folk-tinged adult alternative pop-rock of his band. SEEING THINGS was produced by Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, etc.) in his home studio in what has become Rubin's characteristic manner: as close to live as possible and stripped down to the most elemental aspects of the song and its performance; these 10 songs are the most emotionally and lyrically direct tracks Dylan has so far recorded. Comparisons to his father's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS (the 1975 album produced in response to Jakob's parents' divorce) are not unreasonable. Highlights include the centerpiece track, "Will It Grow," and the album's tender closer, "This End of the Telescope." Really like and admire Jakob; however this album good as it may be shows promise of better things to come. We anxiously await.
Unfortunately thus far Jakob's career moves have been too cautious, almost appear contrived. The time has come to take the gloves off, toss the dice and show us and perhaps even himself what he is truly capable of. The next album could be a gem.

great album
the wallflowers are a fine band, but they have never been this good. With a little help from the greatest producer in the world, Jakob finds his voice.

A perfect match of producer and artist. Dylan's playing, singing, and song-writing are all delicate yet powerful. Rubin's production is, as usual, understated, which brings out all the best aspects of all three, without a bunch of annoying, unnecessary orchestration. To go on more would be a disservice.

Like volume one of the series, this documents the nearly forgotten Nashville R&B scene of the 1950s and 1960s, on 30 obscurities issued on small local labels. It's similar in content to its predecessor: smoky, often raw sides, sometimes sparsely (even crudely) produced, the approaches varying from bluesy stuff and raunchy rock to doo wop and '60s soul. There's even a 1959 gospel side by the Fairfield Four, who wouldn't reach the peak of their fame until almost four decades later. Little-known Bryant has been the keyboardist for Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band for the past decade. On this, his first effort as a leader, he utilizes acoustic and electronically treated keyboard effects with a band featuring tenor saxophonist and Fringe member George Garzone. Garzone is easily the frontman on these seven compositions, all penned by Bryant. Bassist John Turner (Either/Orchestra, Matt Wilson) and drummer Bob Gullotti (the Fringe) make for simpatico running mates on this program, which displays great love and reverence for Coleman's many kinds of jazz-based, forward-thinking ideas. In a manner quite reminiscent of Coleman's magnum opus, Science Fiction, "Detour" features densely thicketed sheets of sound, ruminating organ, string assimilations merging with Garzone's hyperactive tenor, and hopping drum swing. In a more straight-ahead, early Coleman approach, the title cut has that "Happy House" harmelodic sound that Coleman and Don Cherry had down pat.
