While My Morning Jacket began experimenting outside of its signature alt-country/classic-rock sound on 2005's Z, little could have prepared fans for the stylistic shifts apparent on EVIL URGES. Frontman Jim James channels Prince on the slinky opening title track, and the album branches out in a number of directions from there, with prog-rock angularity ("Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 1") and breezy `70s pop ("Sec Walkin'") all added to the mix. On EVIL's biggest curveball, the unabashedly silly "Highly Suspicious," the Kentucky-based group seems to have wandered in Ween territory (not a huge stretch since both acts are neo-jam bands), with James squealing about a "peanut-butter pudding surprise" before a comically terse chorus.
Although the blatant absurdity and over-the-top musical detours may dishearten some MMJ diehards, URGES still features moments that evoke the ensemble of old--"I'm Amazed" is a bright Southern-tinged anthem, and "Librarian" is a gentle acoustic ode to the bookish profession. Listeners will undoubtedly debate whether My Morning Jacket's newfound eccentric and eclectic aesthetic is a virtue or a liability, but, regardless, this approach makes for an inarguably bold and adventurous outing.Rolling Stone (p.81) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "EVIL URGES explodes the bands sound with the same kind of creative leap that Wilco took on YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT and Radiohead took on KID A."

After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.

Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner's and Hammel's angelic vocals. Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery.
