The first two tracks lull the listener into thinking this is going to be a mellow, G-funk outing, but when the piano loop and beat commence in "Still D.R.E.," it's obvious Dre is still light years ahead of the rest. The seemingly disparate styles of guest artists MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem are all unified by Dre's singular musical vision. What makes this record stand out from any other gangsta rap recording before it, however, are the flashes of brutal honesty that pepper the lyrics ("What's the Difference"). Something about Dre's persona and delivery softens his often misogynistic, violent lyrical content. It's as if the audience understands he's only posturing and knows that, deep down, he is a dedicated family man (something he proudly admits). Columbia's 1998 collection of Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits in many ways stands as the group's definitive compilation. Even though there have been more extensive overviews of the group's work, such as the triple-disc set The Eternal Dance, this is the first collection to contain all of the group's biggest hits on one disc. All but one ("Love Music") of the ten songs from 1978's The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire are included, while six of the ten songs from The Best Of, Vol. 2 are featured; the remaining two cuts on the 17-track collection are the minor early single "Kalimba Story" and the album cut "Gratitude." Ten years after Rancid's debut album, INDESTRUCTIBLE shows how far the CA punks have come from their beginnings. Initially, even their fans admitted their strong resemblance to the early Clash sound, but starting with 1998's LIFE WON'T WAIT they began expanding their punk-plus-ska sound. Listening to INDESTRUCTIBLE, it's hard to imagine that Rancid ever sounded like anyone but themselves. Certainly the influence of late-1970s British punk and ska bands can still be felt, but the sophisticated lyrics and carefully conceived (though still driving) arrangements are strictly sui generis. AFTER THE HEAT is a collaboration between Brian Eno and the two members of the band Cluster (though on this release, they were billed by their actual last names). It was originally issued in Germany in 1979; the 1996 Gyroscope reissue is its first U.S. release. German composers Dieter Moebius and Joachim Roedelius formed the synthesizer duo Cluster during the '70s krautrock boom, but only attracted wide attention outside their homeland when they joined forces with Brian Eno for the 1977 album CLUSTER AND ENO. The excellent 1978 follow-up, AFTER THE HEAT, is credited to the three individual participants, emphasizing the contributions of each. Several of the album's 10 pieces, particularly the turbulent "Oil" and "Foreign Affairs," emphasize Moebius' and Roedelius' Tangerine Dream-style analogue synthesizers, while the more reflective, piano-based "Luftschloss" and "The Shade" move toward the gentler ambient directions Eno was beginning to explore around this time. The album's best piece, "Tzima N'Arki," is an intriguing faux-Middle-Eastern collaboration featuring an Eno vocal played backwards, foreshadowing much of Eno's '80s work, including MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS and FOURTH WORLD 1: POSSIBLE ...
