Tim picked up his first guitar at the age of 6, and then promptly dropped it. It seems it was too big for him. After licking his wounds, he swore off music, and moved on to pursue other...pursuits. (Is there a less clumsy way of saying that?) These pursuits did not include vocabulary. They did, however, include religion, theatre (most definitely spelled "-re"), philosophy, and even, for a time, swimming. (Tim was quite possibly the worst swimmer ever to enter competitive waters. In his two-year stint, he managed to win only one race. It was the breast stroke. [Tim's favorite stroke, for purely prurient reasons. "Purely prurient." Say that three times fast. "purely prurient purely prurient purely prurient...] He won this race against only one other competitor, who, he thinks, may have suffered from downs syndrome. Huzzah for the breast stroke! In an effort to make himself a better swimmer, he swore off high school hamburgers and opted instead for high school tossed green salads. With mounds and oodles of cottage cheese. Tim has since sworn off cottage cheese.) Theatre lasted a little longer, and showed more promise for Tim. After getting several lead roles in high school productions of Neil Simon and Tennessee Williams plays, he went on to score more lead roles in college productions of Neil Simon and Edward Albee plays. Tim swore off Edward Albee before he had even heard of him. Ech. Then, Tim stumbled into philosophy. This was IT! This was what he had been looking for! Thales right on down to Karl Popper! After all, Tim was an eighteen-year-old, and therefore already knew everything there was to know! This would be a cakewalk, right? Right...? Tim has since, for the most part, sworn off philosophy. Tim didn't pick up the guitar again for another seventeen years. Still, he remembered his first experience with the thing, and that lovely plunking noise it made when it hit the ground, and he's still making those awkward, plunking noises today. Sludge-psych-biker-metal-whatever you want to call it has rapidly become its own self-sustaining loop, as with any other genre of sorts -- there are its practitioners, its codifiers, those who don't care for the term at all, and more besides, not to mention the side projects and supergroups. Thus Ten East, and thus their second album, where the core duo of Gary Arce and Mario Lalli are joined by, among others, Greg Ginn, who contributes organ and guitar at various points throughout, as does Kyuss/Obsessed veteran Scott Reeder (though just on guitar). The resultant collection of instrumentals comes across as somewhere between formal exercise and enjoyable enough time -- at first it too often seems there's little sense of being completely frazzled and rampaging, instead maintaining a steady pace that locks it in somewhere between opening for Pink Floyd in 1972 and opening for Trans Am in 1999. When the group fully lets fly, admittedly, everything perks up noticeably, and titling one of the quicker romps "Hogbreath" is a nice earthy touch. Similarly, the conclusion to "Ocean Dome" -- thanks to a skybound spiraling guitar part -- is another winner, while "Octopad" finally drops some of the cleanliness a bit to get really riled up and sound like it. Throughout the album one of the sharpest touches comes from Ginn's organ work, which is both perfectly suitable to the material and at times a great wild card, showing that one of the more mysterious figures of American music still has it in him. Meanwhile, while it's not clear if the song "Silkworm" is a tribute to the fine band of the same name, it's definitely another standout for the album, big and politely brawling. ~ Ned Raggett
This is the second release by the Los Angeles-based Ten East. Ten East started up in the mid-'00s as a semi-improvised outfit. They caught the ears of Alone Records out of Spain, who released their debut Extraterrestrial Highway (now re-released by Lexicon Devil). The line-up here is a veritable stoner-punk supergroup: Gary Arce (Yawning Man, Sort Of Quartet), Mario Lalli (Across The River, Fatso Jetson) and Bill Stinson, and joining them are Scott Reeder (Kyuss, ...
