In his highly anticipated sophomore recording, guitarist/composer Jesse Lewis explores new sonic possibilities and blends different genres effortlessly. Lewis is an active contributor to NYC’s creative music scene and has been an established member of the jazz community for many years. He has worked with jazz luminaries such as Ellis Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Chris Potter, and Mark Turner. His new album, Atticus, is the culmination of his collective experiences, both musically and personally. Lewis is featured throughout the recording on a variety of instruments including several electric guitars, acoustic guitar, nylon string guitar and even baritone ukulele. On Atticus, the sounds of the artificial and the acoustic meld seamlessly and compliment each other in refreshing ways. The music grows and evolves organically, taking time to unfold and develop thematic material throughout. The compositions, while notably influenced by jazz, call equally upon myriad other influences. Like many of his generation, Lewis was a true “child of the 80’s,” and was influenced by the aesthetic of 80’s pop music- its simple melodic and harmonic ideas, the sounds of the synthesizers, and the reverb-laden drum machines. His early childhood also fostered a love for the music of his parent’s generation – The Beatles, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Simon and Garfunkel. The influence of Lewis’ years in New Orleans can be heard through the deep, funk grooves on the recording. The rich, distorted guitar solos call to mind alternative rock bands like Nirvana, which he listened to as a teen. The most recent influences come from the electronic music of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, and Clark. Electronic sounds and effects play a major role in each composition. Lewis also utilizes his background in classical music, using cello, flute, and clarinet. All of these genres and artists played an important role in his development as a composer and reveal themselves musically in Atticus. Atticus is a collaborative effort between Lewis and Joseph Davancens. They first met in 2002 while attending the Manhattan School of Music. Davancens, a jazz bassist, was also an avid songwriter and composer of electronic music. After hearing some of his demos, Lewis first had the idea to produce an album together. After graduation, however, the two musicians lost touch. A chance meeting in August of 2007 reignited the idea to collaborate on a recording. Thus, Atticus was born. The decision was to make an album with a true fusion of styles- an honest representation of each musician’s sound, soul and experience. In an amazing and fruitful partnership, Davancens added his own unique ideas and vision. He also used his great skill in the areas of programming, sequencing, and sound design, to give new life to each track. Atticus was written and recorded during the autumn of 2007. Each song was first recorded as a demo version in Davancens’ apartment. After the demo phase was completed, all the parts were painstakingly re-recorded to attain the highest quality sound fidelity possible at LoudLouderLoudest Studios in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Davencens also served as the recording engineer. The making of Atticus was a production of large proportion. In addition to all of the various synthesizers and sequenced drum machines, a broad spectrum of instruments was recorded. Listeners will hear over 30 different string, wind or percussion instruments that contribute to the unique sound and character of each composition. The album was mixed at The Hangar Studios in Sacramento, California. Thanks to Davancens and long time friend and engineer Dana Nielson, each instrument retains its natural acoustic qualities- nothing is lost as a result of overproduction.Atticus features stellar drum set performances by Obed Calvaire (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wynton Marsalis, Peter Cincotti) and wonderful percussion and tabla work by Indian percussionist Rohin Khemani (J

Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD  (2009)

Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrčre of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s jazz scene, where he was in the midst of helping change the music. Here he adds extraordinary taste and precision to these originals of Coltrane's, and standards the saxophonist made his own. Perhaps the most beautiful of all Coltrane compositions is "Wise One," very well done in its flowing, no-time, introductory melody followed by a steady samba based mid-section, with Wilson's guitar gently urging it onward. "Equinox" is usually heard as interpreted by others in a Latin vein, but here the quintet ...

All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazz devotees and progressive rock fans. The music on THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages structure each tune, and McLaughlin ...

Elephonic Rhapsodies
Thai Elephant Orchestra Elephonic Rhapsodies CD  (2004)

Atticus
CD $12.89
The long-awaited follow-up to the earlier Thai Elephant Orchestra album, Elephonic Rhapsodies takes much of the same basic idea, but adds experience and mastery to the proceedings, along with a bit of studio work. The original plan was along the lines of a dance mix of the more avant-garde sounds of the orchestra. Instead, new instruments were added, more elephants were brought in, and they tried new techniques on their various instruments. Only a bit of studio influence can be heard, mostly in basic cleaning on the sounds, and a couple of isolated loops of the elephants' calls. The sound is thoroughly different from the previous album in many ways, more sophisticated perhaps, but also more exploratory (how else would one top the first album of elephant orchestral music, after all?). Pick it up as a continuation of the idea of collaborative inter-species music, or perhaps as an enjoyable listen in its own, aesthetic, right. Where else can you hear a junior-high marching band collaborate with a troupe of elephants on Beethoven? ~ Adam Greenberg The long-awaited second offering of elephants in the Thai jungle playing specially designed musical instruments. The Thai Elephant Orchestra was co-founded by Richard Lair of the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang and performer/composer Dave Soldier. This CD is more tailored for ...

Joshua Slamp CD  (2005)

Atticus
CD $8.55
What best describes the music of Joshua Slamp? One reviewer depicts him as having “deep Lou Reed vocals” and “George Benson-like electric guitar riffs”. Too most, this may seen like an odd blend. But given Joshua’s love of singing and passion for Blues/Jazz improvisation, it’s not surprising. A Pacific NW native, Joshua Slamp was born into a musical family. Beginning ...
