SOUTH PACIFIC, Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical setting of James Michener's TALES FROM THE SOUTH PACIFIC, was one of the duo's most successful productions, but this 2008 version is the first full-scale revival of the show since the original run closed. Starring the hot young ingenue Kelli O'Hara and relative newcomer Paulo Szot in the lead roles, this is a completely authentic version of the original score as it would have been performed more than a half-century ago, right down to the nearly obsolete use of a full live orchestra instead of a small combo augmented by synthesizers and samplers.

5 stars stunning recording
This album is a true wonder of a cast recording. With lush orchestrations that enhance the beauty of the score this cd is the best sung revival recording in many years. Paulo szot is deeply moving and dashing as emile. With a stunningly operatic voice, szot brings the character smashingly to life. Kelli o'hara is perfectly lovely as nellie forbush, bringing vulnerbilty, depth, and romantic spark to the part. But above all, it is o'hara's voice that will move you the most. She nailed her demanding solos in the light in the piazza and she is simply phenomal here. Just listen to a wonderful guy, a cockyeyed optemist, and honey bun and you'll agree. Loretta able sayre has a gorgeous voice and her version of bali ha'i is the best track on the cd. Winner of 7 tony awards including best revival of a musical and best leading actor in a musical, south pacific is a great show and this recording is a must have. Get it now!

Bounce: A New Musical CD  (2004)

South Pacific album
CD $17.09  3.7 stars Audio Samples
Muisc & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Score conducted by David Caddick. Recorded live at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. Includes a book by John Weidman & liner notes by Frank Rich. Original Cast Recording/Original Soundtrack: Howard McGillin, Jane Powell, Michele Pawk, Gavin Creel, Richard Kind, Herndon Lackey. The musical Bounce, with songs by Stephen Sondheim and a libretto by John Weidman (the two had previously collaborated on Pacific Overtures and Assassins), played for six weeks at the Goodman Theater in Chicago (June 30-August 10, 2003), followed by four weeks at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. (October 21-November 16, 2003). These runs may have been considered tryouts for Broadway, but during the D.C. engagement, the producers announced that the show would not be going to New York. They blamed a lack of theater space, but observers noted the negative reviews Bounce had received. For most shows that close out of town, that would have been the end of that, but Sondheim is such a celebrated figure in the musical theater, one whose flops (Anyone Can Whistle, Merrily We Roll Along, both of which made it to Broadway) are nearly as legendary as his hits, that Nonesuch Records recorded the show with the original cast, its commercial failure notwithstanding. Sondheim fans, who may have followed Bounce's long, tortuous gestation (which included rewrites, title changes, re-casting, workshops, and lawsuits), will welcome the result, if only because the songs are characteristic of the composer. It may be unfair, given Sondheim's musical sophistication and nearly unequaled gift for lyrical wit and rhyme, to complain that the Bounce score contains just another bunch of typical Sondheim songs. But it's hard to listen to the album without thinking of earlier compositions. For example, "Addison's Trip" is reminiscent of "Opening Doors" from Merrily We Roll Along, while "You" recalls "Hello, Little Girl" from

Silliness abounds on the Broadway cast recording of MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT, a loose adaptation of the revered (and much-quoted) film MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Penned by Python member Eric Idle (along with his musical collaborator John Du Prez), SPAMALOT follows the absurd adventures of King Arthur (Tim Curry) and his Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Robin (David Hyde Pierce) and Sir Lancelot (Hank Azaria). While the production plays into the conventions of the musical, with plenty of over-the-top singing, it also subverts those cliches, most notably on the hilarious "The Song That Goes Like This," which skewers the Broadway standard of sugary-sweet romantic duets (where a couple can "overact like hell"). Throughout SPAMALOT, cheeky Python-esque humor is always on hand, so much so that the production even includes "Always Look on the Bright Side Of Life," the classic sing-along number from another favorite Python movie, LIFE OF BRIAN. A musical of the highest excalibur! 'Spamalot' is a new broadway show "lovingly ripped-off" from the film 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail'. the show stars tim curry ('The Rocky Horror Picture Show') as King Arthur, David Hyde-Pierce ('Frasier') as Sir Robin and Hank Azaria ('The Simpsons') as Sir Lancelot. Currently playing sold-out shows to packed houses at Broadway's Shubert Theatre, 'Spamalot' captures the distinct brand of Python humour that appeals to audiences of all ages. Directed by legendary Oscar and Tony Award winner Mike Nichols ('Angels In America', 'The Graduate', 'The Birdcage'), 'Spamalot' was written by founding Python member Eric Idle. In addition to many new songs written by idle and composer John Du Prez ('A Fish Called Wanda', 'Monty Python' and 'The Meaning Of Life'), fans will instantly recognize the songs from the 'Holy Grail' film as well as the classic Python tune 'Always Look At The Bright Side Of Life'. For years, Hollywood made a habit out of turning Broadway musicals into films, so it probably shouldn't be too surprising that the tables have turned: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a 1988 feature, became a Broadway musical in 2004. Like the movie, the musical follows the exploits of two con men, one smooth and debonair, John Lithgow, and the other, Norbert Leo Butz, simply small potatoes. Of course, since it's a musical now, a soundtrack had to be added, and David Yazbek wrote both the melodies and the lyrics. Ghostlight's original Broadway cast recording features both Lithgow and Butz along with Sherie René Scott, Joanna Gleason, Gregory Jbara, and a number of others singing lots of bouncy bright show tunes. In a way, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' music and lyrics ("Give Them What They Want" and "Great Big Stuff"), save for a few four-letter words here and there, seems very traditional. Yazbek enjoys wordplay and puns, reminding one a bit of Cole Porter, and has a knack for writing tuneful, memorable melodies like the other purveyors of the classic songbook. Even the music itself on songs like "Here I Am," filled with piano, brass, and the vocal backing of the ensemble, qualifies as a bit old-fashioned. While these aspects might not please the avant-garde, this approach, along with good performances by all involved, are real crowd-pleasers, and make Dirty Rotten Scoundrels easy to listen to over and over. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. Composer/Lyricist: David Yazbek. Original Cast Recording: Gregory Jbara, Joanna Gleason, John Lithgow, Sherie René Scott, Norbert Leo Butz. Personnel: Erik Dellapenna (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, banjo); Claire Chan, Michael Nicholas (violin, viola); Cenovia Cummins, Paul Woodiel, Belinda Whitney (violin); Anja Wood, Sarah Carter (cello); Andrew Sterman (flute, alto flute, piccolo, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Mark Thrasher (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone); Dan Willis

Going into the family business was not what the grandson of songwriting icon Richard Rodgers originally had in mind, but composer/lyricist Adam Guettel rose to the occasion while grabbing the ring at his own steady pace. His musical THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA tells the touching love story of an American tourist and an Italian countryman in post-WWII Firenze. Guettel's unabashed romanticism includes soaring, long-lined melodies, rich and deep harmonic language not far from the land of Sondheim, and lush orchestrations. The refreshing, wide-eyed naivete felt by the young Clara is aptly translated in her solo "The Beauty Is," while Fabrizio's charming awkwardness with English (and with courting a beautiful stranger) is winningly expressed in their duet "Passeggiata. " The exciting rhythms of "Hysteria" and "Octet" recall Stravinsky's neo-classical language. The story's tragic secret is achingly revealed by Clara's mother in "The Beauty Is (Reprise)." All the proceedings are supported by a superior cast including Victoria Clark (URINETOWN, TITANIC), Kelli O'Hara (DRACULA, JEKYLL & HYDE) and Matthew Morrison (HAIRSPRAY, FOOTLOOSE). The future of musical theater may look murky to some. But Guettel's sure-handed amalgam of styles has a voice of his own, one that can point the way. Composer/Lyricist: Adam Guettel. Personnel: Andrew Schwartz (guitar, mandolin); Adam Guettel (guitar); Victoria Drake (harp); Anne Lehmann, Matthew Lehmann, Sylvia Davanzo, Lisa Matricardi, James Tsao, Shinwon Kim, Cenovia Cummins, Joyce Hammann, Victor Schultz, Mineko Yajima, Belinda Whitney, Christian Hebel, Katherine LiVolsi Stern (violin); Peter Sachon, Robert Burkhart, Ariane Lallemand, Eugene J. Wings Of Time
Lauren Pomerantz Wings Of Time CD  (1995)

South Pacific music CDs
CD $15.19
Spot on beautiful vocals by Lauren Pomerantz and masterful playing of medieval instruments create powerful and moving Early Music from ancient Spain.

Sung in Ladino (pre-1942 Spanish) these melodies of the Sephardim (Jews who lived in Medieval Spain) of romance and intrigue are soulful and will touch your heart.

Accompanying herself on an adapted dulcimer, recorders and psaltry by Kit Higginson (early music flutes and harp), rebec and vielle by Shira Kammen (early music's violin and viola), and Peter Maund's percussion are the perfect sound tapestry for these 18 selections. This CD truly offers Sephardic music played at it's best. Moving from passionately lively, to touching ballad, these songs awaken the knowledge that love, romance, spiritual aspiration and heart ache are universal and cross all boundaries of time and culture. Also hear well known biblical stories handed down from the Sephardic oral tradition. There are strikingly beautiful Hebrew poems from Medieval Spain put to Sephardic melodies by Ms. Pomerantz. Press Reviews of Wings of Time:"Exotic and exuberant" New York Times"Extraordinary emotional intensity and musical precision." The Boston Phoenix"Performances are virtuoso and infectious in the extreme, with perfect ensemble, intonation and wonderfully artistic rhythmic sensibility." In Tune Magazine "Think of it as world music from another century, and you'll begin to understand its enormous appeal." San Francisco Weekly"She sings a collection of treasures from the Sephardim..Add these songs to your treasure chest - they sparkle." Napra Trade Journal"One cannot exaggerate the magical, exotically beautiful flow of the melodic lines...to anyone remotely interested in Early Music, Wings of Time amounts to an essential acquisition." In Tune Magazine"There is a special flavor, midway between East and West, in the songs of the Sephardim, sung with compelling tone and exquisite style by Lauren Pomerantz..extraordinary music." The Washington PostArtist biography:Lauren Pomerantz is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and later received a MA for her Early Music work overseas in Spain and Switzerland at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Living overseas on an island off the coast of Spain for almost 9 years, she lived in close communion with the earth and the indigenous people of the land. There in Spain, her musical life was reawakened when she discovered the Golden Age of Spain which heralded in Jewish, Arab and Christian cultures in collaboration and exultation. The Sephardim, when expelled from Spain in 1492, carried with them, through oral tradition, these appealing songs of Life and Love. EXPRESSO 2222 is the sound of a joyous homecoming. Gilberto Gil had spent the previous two years in political exile in England, and this 1972 album was his first release after returning. Its percolating grooves, full-band arrangements, and effervescent feeling stand in stark contrast to the melancholy, acoustic sparseness of his preceding self-titled album. Bits of the rock influences he picked up in London are brought to bear here within the context of more traditionally Brazilian styles for a rich stylistic mix. Originally released in 1972, Expresso 2222 is Gil's first release since returning to Brazil after a two year political exile and the joy is palpable within the grooves. Moving away from the psychedelic tone of his late '60s recordings, Expresso 2222 has

Re: "BACK TO THE ENDLESS""Back to the Endless" was born out of my own personal search.

After a long and very successful career in the 'commercial' world of music,I stopped.

I traveled to the Middle East.

I walked the very same streets and pathways that have been worn away by thousands of feet over thousands of years. It is as it was and all its surroundings, rich in history, are still very much alive. The Hassidim, the Arabs, walk around you as if indifferent to the passage of time, all dressed in the ancient garb of their ancestors- and the Christian clerics still guard the holy sites of the One from Nazareth.

Across from new shopping malls, shepherds still tend to their flocks, and a few kilometers further down the road, the malls turn into Bedouin tents.

For ten years I returned, again and again, to Israel.

Here I found a Home. And, among all the many who make up this region, I found life. Haim.

Around me, swirling Modern day life demanded its existence, but at its very root, the essence of spiritual energy rose from the ground, into the air, through my nose and into my soul.

I believe we come from a place called the "ENDLESS", and it is to this place we return.

I've always carried the notion that, at our very core, we were basically all the same.

With what differences we carried here on this earth, for however long our stay, we would all return to the source -- that place where ego melted, hatred and cruelty vanished, pain and suffering disappeared, and the very stuff that we are made of, found its Home, in the vastness and mystery, called the "ENDLESS"."Back To The Endless" is a chronicle of my journey.

Hopefully it provides a place for everyone to experience his or her own personal journey, bringing the distance of the great beyond a little nearer and the distances between all of us, here on earth, a little closer.
