| | John 5 Requiem CD John 5 Discography of CDs
Since John 5 has gained acclaim from the A-list of guitar gods -- the Steve Vais, the Joe Satrianis, the Paul Gilberts, and the Yngwie Malmsteens -- you pretty much know what to expect with his solo albums: a total and utter shred-fest to show off his scorching chops. His fourth release, Requiem, is exactly that. It acts as a calling card to prove that he's a praiseworthy axemaster as he blasts through scales and exercises in blazing fury. Yes, he's fast enough to solo in front of Racer X, and yes, he can sweep classical-style arpeggios just like the curly-locked former leader of Rising Force. In fact, there's not much that he can't do with the guitar stylistically. Like his prior albums, he inserts chicken-pickin' country and down-home bluegrass in his set alongside metal macabre instrumentals, and ups the ante with a more adventurous playing technique and new and improved tricks. He certainly is an innovative soloist -- whether he's bending the string behind the nut, toggling pickups mid-slide, or hammering the pick on the fretboard -- but while a full album of mile-a-minute scales and tricks may please six-string cowboys looking to drool over the fastest gunslinger and his shiny pistol (in this case a custom Telecaster), it can prove exhausting for anyone looking for dynamic shifts or memorable melodies. Speed and speed alone is the name of the game on this release. That said, the Guitar Center patrons and over-caffeinated teenagers at the bus stop arguing over the best shredder of 2008 will be hard-pressed to find anyone more skillful or relentless. Just play "Heretic's Fork," "The Judas Cradle," "The Lead Sprinkler," "Scavenger's Daughter," or any of the other torture devices listed on the album for further proof. ~ Jason Lymangrover
Personnel: John 5 (guitars, banjo); Tommy Clufetos (drums).

$19.15 The Swedish metal outfit Opeth descends on a mesmerized crowd of Londoners in THE ROUNDHOUSE TAPES, a grimly spellbinding concert film recorded live at the Roundhouse in 2006. This epic performance showcases the band's trademark experimental flair, as they build delicate acoustic atmospheres and slice them through with hard-rock guitars. The powerful set includes "Ghost of Perdition," "Bleak," "Face of Melinda," and many other fan-favorite tracks.

| | John 5 Vertigo CD (2004)
Requiem songs
$13.65 Fresh out of Marilyn Manson's band, guitarist John5 wasted no time issuing his solo debut, 2004's Vertigo. And for Manson disciples expecting the album to strictly follow to the game plan that John5 followed with his previous employer, you're sure to be in for a surprise. While there are tracks that are certainly Manson-esque, John5 shows that he's one of the more versatile guitar pickers on the scene today, as more than half the album wouldn't sound out of place being played on-stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Set the CD on "random play" and you're sure to fool others into thinking it's a compilation of several top guitar shredders. Things kick off with a pair of tracks that are what you'd expect from a former Marilyn Manson guitarist: the over-the-top shredfest "Needles, CA" and the riff rocker "Feisty Cadavers." But this soon proves to be a completely false assumption, as evidenced by such bluegrass ditties as "Sugar Foot Rag" and a cover of "Sweet Georgia Brown," the square dance-esque title track, and a blues-rock track that brings to mind the "guitar duel" between Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio in Crossroads, "Pulling Strings." Although some may automatically write off Mr. 5 due to his ghoulish makeup and attire, Vertigo will certainly please fans of such ...
| | John 5 Songs For Sanity CD (2005)
Requiem album
$13.49 As a hired gun for such renowned hard rockers as Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, and Marilyn Manson, guitarist John5 got to show his six-string skills -- but only to a degree. With the focus mainly on songwriting, he wasn't able to shred away at will. This all changed when John5 started issuing solo albums, such as his 2005 effort, Songs for Sanity. Issued a year after 2004's Vertigo, his debut for Shrapnel (a label known mostly for instrumental metal guitar releases), John5 returned with an album that proved even more diverse than its predecessor. For longtime fans, John5's ability to tackle a wide variety of music shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as he's also appeared alongside k.d. lang and Leah Andreone. Still, it's a downright hoot to hear a supposed metal guitarist playing bluegrass licks, as he does on the tracks "Fiddlers" and the album opening "Perenium" ...
