| | Roy Hargrove Earfood CD Roy Hargrove Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Trumpeter Roy Hargrove emerged in the 1980's jazz scene as something of a protégé of Wynton Marsalis. EARFOOD is Hargrove's debut for the reactivated Emarcy imprint, and here he balances a reverence for classic jazz (hard bop and soul jazz, specifically) with a yearning for a larger audience. With 13 selections, both originals and choice covers, Hargrove's quintet opts for a sleek, direct approach--solos are terse and spirited, the melodies engagingly catchy in the manner of Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and Hugh Masekela. EARFOOD is earnest, straight-ahead jazz, loaded with smarts, swing, and soul.
2008 album recorded by Roy's working quintet, playing a repertoire consisting of songs they play live while on tour, mixed in with a few new originals. Simple melodies moving around luscious chords are to the fore, and Roy gets back to his Jazz roots after the RH Factor releases. Ear Food presents a richly colored snapshot of an artist reaching his prime, a young player once dubbed ubiquitously as the 'Young Lion', is now head of The Jazz Pride. He has nothing left to prove as his current trumpet sound reveals in his total command of tone that’s inflected with subtle emotions and, when needed, pure Hard Bop power. 13 tracks. Universal.

JazzTimes (p.58) - "Hargrove is playing as well as he ever has here....Easy-to-grasp but impossible-to-exhaust tunes and grooves..." Earfood
$13.89 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey ...

Earfood
$10.99 As one of the "young lions" who emerged on the jazz scene in the late 1980s, trumpeter Roy Hargrove belongs to the jazz camp that harks back to the classic hard bop put out on Blue Note and Verve in the 1950s and early '60s. NOTHING ...
| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Earfood
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well. Each bandmember contributes one piece to the album (Holland does claim the other four, however) and, more often than not, uses that opportunity to shapeshift, to push the band -- and make no mistake, this is a band, not a random collection of studio players -- into unexplored territory. That's not to say that Holland takes a ...
| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Earfood
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences and sees Antonio Hart switching ...
| | Christian McBride Kind Of Brown CD (2009)
Earfood
$14.09 One might assume that bassist Christian McBride's KIND OF BROWN would be a tribute to Ray Brown. In fact, this music bears a strong resemblance to the late-'60s to mid-'70s Blue Note recordings of the legendary Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land quintet. A new discovery in vibraphonist Warren Wolf, Jr., teamed with veteran saxophonist Steve Wilson, the wonderful pianist Eric Reed, and drummer Carl Allen makes McBride's quintet Inside Straight one of the more melodically tuneful and harmonically focused contemporary ensembles now ...
| | Dean Brown Here CD (2001) (Import) Import
Earfood
$43.09 Session guitar whiz Dean Brown steps out with his solo debut, a set of tightly played, nicely recorded jazz-funk fusion tunes. Brown's guitar work is undeniably tasty -- drawing equally, it seems, from Jimi Hendrix and Larry Carlton. For support he drafts the biggest of the big names: Michael and Randy Brecker, David Sanborn, Billy Cobham, Marcus Miller, George Duke, Christian McBride, and quite a few others. Brown's original music at times lapses into cliché, particularly on the soft jazz throwaway "Believe Me." The vocal cut "Tell It (Like It Is)" and the Beatles cover "Baby You're a Rich Man" also don't add up to much. But the album has its high points: the rocking 6/8 assault of "Solid"; the churning, laid-back syncopation ...
