The Linear Scaffold was Solefald's debut album, and it showed right off the bat that they were a band with their own sound and vision. They get lumped into the black metal genre, and they do have certain sonic elements in common with the more symphonic black metal bands such as early Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir; for instance, the big pipe organ keyboards and the painfully shrieking vocals that appear on much of this album. But Solefald passes on the overdone gothic aesthetic favored by so many bands in this same symphonic black metal field, and their music is more wide-ranging and open to experimentation than most bands of that type. Considering that this is just a duo, the songs and arrangements are especially full-sounding, incorporating a variety of keyboards (synth strings, acoustic piano, horror movie organs, and the above-mentioned pipe organs) and vocal styles (clean-voiced singing, spoken passages in both French and English, death metal growls, and high-pitched shrieks) in addition to a nice mix of clean-toned, distorted, and acoustic guitars. The songwriting also has a great sense of flow and dynamics, balancing moody, atmospheric sections with moments of shrieking, blasting intensity, and heaviness. Just as importantly, they come up with consistently strong and memorable melodies throughout the album. For music of this expansive, open-ended sort, this album is a bit on the short side, clocking in at less than 40 minutes, but that's just about the only criticism. One of Solefald's best. ~ William York

$10.09 What is it?âWe have played with transvestites, folk singers, been in bands we did not want to be in, and sold burgers from a stand. Star Little Thing was our opportunity to do something we all wanted to doâ. Following the demise of other musical projects, Arron and Grattan were keen to start something new. They spent a while kicking some dance tunes around, but found that grew tired fairly quickly. A chance meeting, on the street, with writer, cricky, was to mean Star Little Thing were born. Cricky added the missing piece to the puzzle. Words were not something Grattan or Arron found an easy thing to do, so minds met, and music was made, to varying degrees of experimentation , electronica, dance, rock, and pop.âLovers of Lifeâ, although one of the later songs to be written by the band, was their first single. It received heavy air play on radio nationwide, but none more so than phantom, who championed the song from day 1. With all this attention it wasnât long before drinks giant Heineken came knockin to include the song in their latest TV ad, which saw the song as the idea for the ad, rather than a mere backing track.A string of shows then saw the bands profile rise and rise, which climaxed in summer 2007 with the bands 2nd headline slot @ Castlepalooza, where the lads were joined for the first time by the full live band, and were considered by many to have been the band of the weekend. All this build up, led nicely to the release of their debut album.âIts easy to be alive you just areâ was released in oct â07 amidst a haze of media, as part of the âWrangler wanted weekendâ, alongside acts such as MOS DEF, and DE LA SOUL. The album was critically welcomed. The Dubliner said âI am very happy to ...
| | Hal Brolund Worn Out Shoes CD (2008)
Liner Scaffold CD music
$17.09 Worn Out Shoes is a captivating blend of confidence and vulnerability and highlights Brolund's skills as a writer and performer of original material. The songs range from stories about roadside chicken joints to failed relationships and pure red blooded lust. The undercurrent of the CD is a quiet faith that love will win out and that the real heroism of a relationship isn't whether it survives but that fragile broken people even try to love at all. Amen!At 18 Manitoba Hal Brolund began to pursue music. "I was hanging out with a buddy and he was jamming on his acoustic guitar to some record. Suddenly, like a bolt of lightning it hit me. I would play guitar the rest of my life" says Brolund. Choosing a path ...
