Owl And Timber album
$12.69 First of all, I’d like to point out that none of these songs have anything to do with my lovely wife, Kerry. We’ve been married for 29 years and she has never given me any good material for a good bluegrass song. Well, maybe some happy ones. But that’s not the theme of this CD. I’ve been playing bluegrass and writing tunes for about 35 years. Some of these tunes are pretty close to being 35 years old and I’m just now getting around to recording them. For those of you who want to do the math, that gives me about a 6 year window for the songs about other women. Having said all that, some of these tunes are brand new and, as of this writing, have never been performed in front of a live audience.I’m guessing that the majority of these CD’s will wind up in the hands of those of you who have known me for a while. If, by chance, you strangers out there start buying this CD, it might be a good idea to tell you a little about myself. It’s not like you’re going to find me on Wikipedia or something.I’m a middle-aged guy from Idaho. I have a good day job, a great wife, Kerry, two fine sons, Ryan and Mike, many good friends, and a very old Lab named Barney (see track 10). I’m very proud of my sons. Ryan is a fine musician and helped me with some of the guitar work and the arrangements on this record. Some of you may know Ryan and I from our seven years of traveling around the northwest with our bluegrass band, Deadline Ridge. The band broke up in 2007 but Ryan and I still play music together from time to time.Mike is in the US Army and recently returned, safely, from a 14 month tour in Iraq. (see track 6) He is presently serving in Alaska and is getting married soon to a very cool Alaska girl named Nicole. Mike has done some amazing things, but I really can’t go into to that here. Very proud.I like listening to all types of music but bluegrass is what I love and it’s what I play. I really enjoy straight-ahead, traditional, south-eastern bluegrass. But, no matter how hard I try, the tunes I write usually come out with a western slant to them. I guess that’s because I’m from Idaho. Heck, I’ve never even been to Kentucky.Well, whatever you call these tunes, I hope you get a little something out of them. I should have another CD ready to go in another 35 years. | | Brighton Ma Amateur Lovers CD (2008)
Owl And Timber CD music
$15.15 "Every once in a great while you'll hear a new band that, in some way or another, reaffirms your love of music, your adoration for history and your admiration for artists who find splendor in the simplest of notes, phrases or progressions. Brighton, MA does just that." -Tom Lynch (New City Chicago)Brighton MA hails from Chicago IL, which could, at first glance, seem confusing. They take their name from singer Matthew Kerstein's birthplace, evoking the idea of all sorts of homes you can never go back to (even as the four band members build their own home within the name.) This is a fundamental element in Kerstein's layered lyricsâ€"they're steeped in a history that remembers the past, only in as much as it informs the present. Following up their 2007 debut six track, self-titled EP (also on Loose Tooth), Amateur Lovers marks the band's first full-length record and a step forward in the band's evolution, both in terms of songwriting and execution. Kerstein, guitarist Jim Tuerk, bassist Devon Bryant and drummer Sam Koentopp collaboratively elaborate on and grow Kerstein's songs, adding warm arrangements and finding ways to make each twist and turn feel natural and familiar. From the buttery summer of "Your Sweet Time" to the hissing winter of "The Flood", from the insistent soul glam of "Underground" and the exuberant evolution walk-through in "Eskimos", the band stretches themselves to the edge to find out what can be built to last. There, Kerstein sings: "You know there's a sense of time/Whispers in the back of your Holy Roman Mind of all the places left behind/To begin something new."Narratively, Amateur Lovers expertly explores the dichotomy between learned knowledge and history, and the reflection of what one can take from one's experiencesâ€"what it all means. There's struggle, there's confusion, there's growth and redemption, and an underlying hope for the future based on ...
