Casse Tete album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence ...

| | Barry Van Zyl African Heartbeat: Drums & Percussion From Southern Africa CD (2008)
Casse Tete CD music
$13.85 Although Johnny Clegg's drummer Barry Van Zyl has previously put out albums of African music with a thick regional sound, African Heartbeat provides African concepts at their most primitive level. The sound is stripped down to just the percussion, and the performers stripped down to only Van Zyl himself. Instead of reproducing ethnic sounds directly, as he has done in the past, here Van Zyl picks and chooses bits and pieces of sounds and approaches from among the various musical styles of the region. However, it's more conceptual than musical here -- with only Van Zyl playing, the sound can become rather sparse. As he tries to maneuver through multiple incarnations of rain ideas, into "laid-back" versions of heavy urban beats, through sentimental passages that end in gong strikes, one can't ever quite be sure where he's going. For all of the skill shown in his previous albums, and more so with Johnny Clegg's band, this album ...

| | Rachael Kilgour CD (2009)
Casse Tete CD music
$15.19 While touring nationally as a backup singer and violinist for Catie Curtis (and appearing regionally with Sara Thomsen), Rachael Kilgour’s own songs were met with overwhelming approval from audiences. Breaking from her pursuit of a music degree, she focused on the album that was bubbling forth—and this young artist draws from a soulful and gritty wellspring. Bold, lyrical, passionate, Kilgour sings about love, heartache, and social justice with determination and charm. She is tender on “Bluebird,” a beautiful lullaby that features her 7-year-old daughter; jilted but forceful on “Tell Me Washington”; haunting and vulnerable on “Sun’s Going Down.” Unafraid of sincerity and eschewing self-absorption in her songs, Kilgour writes about what matters. She seamlessly moves from sweet to commanding, determined to joyful, intimate to ...
