Recording information: Kampo studios, New York, NY (10/24/2007-02/14/2008). Photographer: John Rynski. Arrangers: Steven Bernstein ; Babi Floyd; Frank London; Doug Wieselman. Saxophonist Paul Shapiro follows up the forward-thinking klezmer hybrids he unleashed on his previous Tzadik releases, MIDNIGHT MINYAN and IT'S IN THE TWILIGHT, by taking a different approach. Rather than grafting forms such as Dixieland and bebop onto traditional Jewish instrumental music, ESSEN delivers those Jewish folk forms in their pure, unadulterated form. The songs on ESSEN feature vocals as well, each of them spinning a narrative that evokes the humor and pathos of traditional Jewish culture, sometimes evoking the broad comedy of early-20th-century Yiddish theater or even the Borscht Belt. Of course, Shapiro's fine horn work and ear for arrangements dazzle as well. Essen Review

$14.59 Personnel: Erik Friedlander (cello); Andy Laster (alto saxophone); Stomu Takeishi (bass); Satoshi Takeishi (percussion). Recorded at Context Studio, New York, New York on January 15 & 16, 2002. Recording information: Context Studio, New York, NY (01/15/2002/01/16/2002). Editors: Erik Friedlander; Rich Breen . Photographer: Lee Melen. On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; ...

Essen
$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. ...

$12.85 Eri Yamamoto: Eri Yamamoto (piano); David Ambrosio (bass instrument); Ikuo Takeuchi (drums). Personnel: Ikuo Takeuchi (drums). Liner Note Author: Eri Yamamoto. Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY (02/18/2008). Photographer: Rika Yamamoto. New York-based pianist Eri Yammamoto takes an inventive and ambitious approach to the traditional jazz trio record on REDWOODS, her fifth full-length recording. On REDWOODS Yamamoto turns in an accomplished set of sinuous, rhythmically elusive compositions with the help of a talented rhythm section composed of longtime collaborators drummer Ikuo Takeuchi and bassist David Ambrosio. After some 13 years living in the U.S. (New York City) after moving from Kyoto, Japan, acoustic pianist Eri Yamamoto's contemporary jazz style has not only come of age, but has fully blossomed, flowered, and is as beautiful as any mature rose. This trio recording -- with veteran bassist David Ambrosio and longtime drummer Ikuo Takeuchi -- shows Yamamoto's fluid melodic elements, sprawling vistas of color, and her innate common sense in stringing together lines of passion and cleanliness. While remaining in a modern ...
