(7 Customer Reviews)
The forward-thinking Swedish titans, who seamlessly and fluidly combine metal, classic rock, prog, folk and free form jazz, continue the Opeth tradiion with their second album on Roadrunner. The DVD companionpiece features rehearsal tapes, a 5.1 audio mix of Watershed and 3 bonus tracks.
Opeth's ninth studio outing ,WATERSHED, is not only an improvement upon 2005's GHOST REVERIES, it plunges the group headlong into a fresh wellspring of creativity that is evident throughout. Starting with the folkish "Coil," the band plays with a host of new sounds, allowing the keyboards to breathe and simultaneously lulling the listener into a false sense of security with sugary female vocals. Opeth then blasts into "Heir Apparent" with a rejuvenated fervor not heard since 2001's BLACKWATER PARK. WATERSHED is riddled with new, experimental instrumentation, heart-pounding song arrangements and impeccably crisp production. A pioneer of atmospheric genre-blending, Opeth takes its neo-progressive rock and scorches it with some of the most black-tongued, shredding death metal this side of the abyss.
Opeth: Mikael Åkerfeldt (vocals, guitars); Fredrik Akesson (guitar); Per Wiberg (keyboards); Martín Mendez (bass guitar); Martin Axenrot (drums).
Alternative Press (p.166) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hat Opeth do best is flat-out shred, and at its finest moments, WATERSHED yowls like the unholy union of Queensryche, Yngwie Malmsteen and Morbid Angel." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "Part of Opeth's power has always been derived from the multitude of moods and stylistic shifts they employ...this is once again powerfully demonstrated across WATERSHED with every track a musical journey in itself." Q (Magazine) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Patience, persistence and a good set of headphones will uncover fragile melodies here amid the maelstrom..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]tuffed with radical style shifts, key and tempo changes, unexpected about-turns and riffs emerging from every corner." Watershed Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Opeth shares their craft (print this one) Not may artist living up to expectations these days. Opeth not only do just that with this release but they manage to surpass what some expected. Opeth fits nicely into the pro catagory even though some hate the title its short for progessive which is clearly what WATERSHED brings us. Progressiveness to say the list with acoustic bliss to its maddening full on death like assualt, its simply all there. Well it's not simple it's actually very complex and beautifully madening at the same time. Watershed is easily one of the best releases of the 2008 year and it's worth all your hard earned cash so please add this to your collection. Amazing (yet again) Opeth continues to push the envelope with each consecutive release. Allthewhile, they don't rest on their laurels or to pull off their sound. Watershed has all the elements one would expect from an Opeth release, but a unique presentation and even some surprises. I was a bit nervous about how the new members would sync with Mikael, Mendez and Wiberg, but they fit in perfectly. This is certainly not their heaviest work, but when they do push the trigger, it's as aggressive as any Opeth fan could wish. Awesome on all counts. My First Opeth Album! Very well crafted in terms of song writing, musicianship and production! Not a fan of the growl vox, but I totally dig the singer's voice. Progressive rock is about all I listen to, and I prefer prog with song writing sensibility and great melodies. Watershed has all that. Also the dynamics are brilliant, and very well written. Honestly the best albume I've heard in '08. Submitted by James (Minneapolis, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Opeth does it again! New album Watershed just blows all expectations and doubts out the door. Ghost Reveries was a good indication, but who knew they'd take it this far? Along that same path, but even further, even more adventurous and dynamic than before.
As someone else said, it's not their heaviest work, but after hearing it, I doubt anyone will care. Simply an excellent album on all counts. Superb! Submitted by Patrick (Santa Fe, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Watershed CD music
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.
Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York between March & April 2002.
Porcupine Tree: Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin, Gavin Harrison, Steven Wilson.
Personnel: John Wesley (guitar, background vocals); Julian Leaper, Perry Mason, Warren Zielinski, Mark Berrow, Katherine Shave, Dave Woodcock, Rebecca Hirsch, Paul Willey, Ben Cruft, Boguslaw Kostecki, Rita Manning, Everton Nelson, Johnathan ...
| | Opeth Damnation CD (2003)
Watershed music CDs
$14.59 Best known for pushing the boundaries of progressive death metal, Sweden's Opeth have been gradually moving away from the traditional low-growling sound, towards a cleaner vocal style. Though their previous six efforts involved a signature balance of heavy and mellow sections, it wasn't until they started using the production of Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) that they began to shine. 2001's BLACKWATER PARK broke the band to a wider audience without taming any of their metallic fury. A subsequent limited edition contained two bonus tracks that hinted at a quieter version of Opeth to come.
DELIVERANCE (2002) picked up where BWP left off. But it was only the first of a two-pronged attack. DAMNATION is its counterpart and has all of the intensity without any of the bombast. Clean electric and acoustic guitars and vocals dominate the record. Wilson's keyboard touches add shading and color to the bleak Opethian soundscape--casual listeners might not even recognize this as the same band. Opeth continues to force changes to the definition ...
