1929-1934 album
$12.09 Digitally remastered by George Morrow (Echo Productions, Hayward, California).
During the early years of the Depression, bandleader Ben Selvin (who was very prolific in general during a 15-year period) led an enormous quantity of jazz-influenced dance band recording dates. The TOM label's second Ben Selvin CD is, if anything, even better than their first. There are short spots on some selections for clarinetist Benny Goodman, trombonist (and, in one case, scat singer) Jack Teagarden, trombonist Tommy Dorsey, and trumpeters Leo McConville and Manny Klein, plus vocals from Eddie Walters, Irving Kaufman, Smith Ballew and Helen Rowland, among others. Although the jazz aspects of the music are not dominant, the arrangements swing ...
| | Jan Garber Hot Years 1925-1930 CD (1998)
1929-1934 CD music
$12.09 Jan Garber is most famous for leading a popular dance band in the 1930s and '40s, one that was originally inspired by Guy Lombardo and featured shaking saxophones and rather sickly sweet music that sounds laughably dated today. However, before he turned mostly toward schlock, Jan Garber had a surprisingly viable jazz/dance band in the 1920s. This CD from the collectors' TOM (The Old Masters) label mostly dates from 1926-29, and it is filled with ...

| | Sam Lanin Turn On The Heat: Hot Dance Band Sides 1925-1931 CD (2007)
1929-1934 album
$14.35 Undeniably the most productive and jazz-connected of the four musically inclined Lanin brothers, clarinetist, drummer, and bandleader Sam Lanin is the hero of this enjoyable compilation released by Rivermont Records in January of 2007. Its 27 tracks reproduce historic hot jazz and dance band recordings made during the years 1925-1931 by a dizzying procession of ensembles, some with colorful names like the Broadway Broadcasters, the Ipana Troubadours, Lynn Cowan and his Boulevard Theatre Orchestra, Chic Nelson's Collegians and the Benjamin Franklin Hotel Dance Orchestra. These monikers represent only the tiniest ...
