With so much wrong with the world circa the early 21st century, the anger and message of hardcore has perhaps never rung more true. And there are quite a few chaps that feel the same way, as evidenced by the emergence of new bands that specialize in vintage hardcore sounds -- case in point, Providence, RI's Verse. Most longtime hardcore admirers may have heard it all before (shouted vocals, guitar riffs blasting away, rapid-fire drums, etc.), but the Verse gentlemen certainly pull it off well throughout their 2008 release, Aggression, as it certainly sounds like it's all coming from the heart, and not merely a pose. This high-energy quartet performs Blink 182-style pop-punk that owes more of a sonic debt to Green Day than to first-generation types like the Buzzcocks, which means the accent here is on pop. As single-minded in their pursuit of this aesthetic as any great rock band should be, New Found Glory keep it exclusively fast and loud, never pausing for anything as transgressive as a ballad (the title of "Ballad For the Lost Romantics" notwithstanding); they don't even bother adding additional instruments to the arrangements.
The guitar-bass-drums axis reigns unchallenged throughout the album. The only adornment is consistently spot-on vocal harmonies that add just the right amount of pop tinge to New Found Glory's relentlessly hard-charging tunes.
You know these guys are old-school pop-punk when "Hit or Miss" begins with the words "the needle on my record player has been wearing thin" at a time ...

Eventually, the man goes mad and commits suicide. Employing synthesizers, Iron Maiden takes a two-fold risk: with the music and by doing a concept album. This formula might have spelled disaster for most bands, but not Iron Maiden. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON turned out to be one of the band's strongest releases, debuting in the U.K. charts at Number One, and spawning four Top-10 singles ("Can I Play With Madness," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Prophecy," and "Infinite Dreams"). The band's popularity had reached an all-time high around this time, as Maiden headlined the 1988 Monsters of Rock concert at England's Castle Donnington. During the single-day event, Iron Maiden played to a record 100,000 fans, headlining over such big names as Kiss, David Lee Roth, Guns N' Roses, and Megadeth.
In 1988, harsh thrash metal and radio-friendly glam rock were the two chief heavy metal styles. Whatever the exact reason for the nomenclature, Mighty Six Ninety make a nice splash with their debut, a promising if not overly original album. Partially what catches the ear is the sense that they draw on some of the less name-dropped acts of brisk '80s alternative rock -- lead singer Richard Gardner has a sweetly melancholic air to his singing that suggests bands like Anything Box or For Against, while the gliding beauty of the arrangements exchanges nervous tension for elegant power.
