After cutting one album during the 1990s, Rambler's Choice disbanded, and the members went their separate ways. Lead vocalist/guitarist Junior Sisk worked with both Lost & Found and Blueridge, while bassist/singer Tim Massey worked in a variety of bands. Now, some ten years later, Sisk and Massey have put the group back together (apparently minus the apostrophe in "Rambler's Choice") with mandolinist Chris Harris, fiddler Billy Hawks, and banjoist Darrell Wilkerson. While writer Jon Weisberger places Ramblers Choice's music somewhere between the new and old in the liner notes, Sisk's vocal is clearly old school, harking back to Bill Monroe country-tinged nasal. Having said this, the material does mix old and new, drawing from gospel, country, and contemporary sources, with songs about dust on the family Bible, broken love affairs, and making a living by making moonshine. The opener, "The Wolf Is at the Door," is a wry, uptempo number with some fine harmony work on the choruses, while the spry "Steel Rail Rider" brings the album to a joyful close. Ramblers Choice play well as a unit, focusing on the integrity of each song, and keeping the arrangements simple. The production by Ronnie Bowman (who penned or co-penned several of the album's songs) is likewise straightforward. With Blue Side of the Blue Ridge, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice have delivered a solid album that leans toward tradition. ~ Ronnie D. Bob Vickers has spent the last decade and a half on the fringe of the Bay Area power pop scene, first as one-half of the appealingly quirky one-off Cerebral Corps, whose Attributed to Cerebral Corps was probably the best thing Alias Records ever released that involved neither Yo La Tengo nor the Loud Family, and later as the drummer of the fantastic but frustratingly non-prolific Orange Peels. His brother Rob Vickers (credited with lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards) is a figment of his own imagination. Together (?), they're the Incredible Vickers Brothers, and their debut album Gallimaufry is a fine example of the more twee end of power pop. The album was produced by Allen Clapp (who also plays percussion and Mellotron) and recorded in Clapp's home studio, so this is fundamentally an Orange Peels record with Clapp and Vickers' band roles reversed. (The third OP, bassist Jill Pries, makes a guest appearance on the minute-long surf-twang instrumental "Ballad of an Orange Peel," which is just the sort of brief mid-album interlude the band's own albums tend to have.) Vickers even exhibits a similar sense of sunshine pop winsomeness on frustrated love songs like "Top of the Stairs" and "Girl and Her Time," as well as a similarly playful sense of humor on ...

Premier boogie-woogie pianist Mark Lincoln Braun (aka Mr. B) has released a good handful of recordings as a leader, mainly for local Michigan-based labels. Joybox was independently issued by B in 1998, and is available here as a straight reissue in 2008 on the Megawave label. While expertly paying tribute to his heroes, especially Vernon Harrison (aka Boogie Woogie Red), the pianist stretches out into modern mainstream jazz forms during his solos and improvisations. With bassist Paul Keller and drummer Pete Siers, he has the rhythmic tools to vault the balance beam and effectively straddle the line between blues and jazz. Mr. B, at his core a get-down player, leads off taking no pitches on "Rockin' with Red" in a feverishly hot mood. "Joybox Rocks" and "The Ray" are the most straightforward tracks, and "Cornell Street" is utterly bouncy.
