Slow Burnin' Fire album
$10.09 Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. There's also some string work performed by some mysterious entity know as "the Skipper." If the Latin Playboys were an instrumental country band, they would almost certainly sound something like this. While it's true that Anderson's guitaristry is signature to all he does, he understands dynamic, rhythm, and atmosphere and texture as well. Check the beautifully warm and silvery "My Little Angel," with Thornberg's English horn wafting under Anderson's slippery Telecaster, playing romantically over a shimmering B-3 ...
| | Bill Perry Raw Deal CD (2004)
Slow Burnin' Fire CD music
$13.75 Producer and fellow New Yorker guitar slinger Popa Chubby effectively captures Bill Perry's sharp licks and road hardened style on the appropriately titled Raw Deal. The sound is sufficiently unrefined, as is Perry's raspy voice, on this set of searing originals, tempered by a handful of terrific covers. Lyrically the stereotypical life of a "bluesman," told in rather clichéd detail on "Bluesman," ("no insurance, can't get sick") "Big Ass Green Van" and "Going Down to Memphis," doesn't help propel these otherwise well written and arranged songs past established boundaries of the blues-rock genre. "Terrorists," Perry's anti-Iraq war entry, fares somewhat better. Regardless, it's his relentless guitar solos that give this music its guts, and that is where Perry excels. His tone is as gritty as his voice, chewing through this material with licks that reach out and grab the listener, and then pull back into the track. Perry is a master of succinct, fluid lines and has the sense to know when to stop playing, a trick too many in his field haven't mastered. His playing ...
| | Bill Kirchen Hammer Of The Honky-Tonk Gods CD (2006)
Slow Burnin' Fire music CDs
$14.59 The title cut of Bill Kirchen's seventh solo album, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods, is a loving tribute to the Fender Telecaster, the axe that's been Kirchen's instrument of choice since he started picking with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in 1967, but while there's plenty of fine guitar work on this album (which from Kirchen should go without saying), this isn't the straight-ahead honky tonk session you might expect given Kirchen's back catalog. While the title cut and "Get a Little Goner" would sound great pouring out of any beer joint's jukebox, Hammer ...

| | Norah Jones Not Too Late CD (2007) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Slow Burnin' Fire album
$21.69 Jones's third album, NOT TOO LATE, is perhaps not as extreme as any of those other moves away from her initial comfort zone, but it's a departure nonetheless. Recorded by Jones and longtime collaborator Lee Alexander in their home studio and featuring only self-penned material, NOT TOO LATE is far less polished than Jones's previous records, with many songs featuring ...

| | Deva Premal Dakshina CD (2005)
Slow Burnin' Fire music CDs
$13.49 Using traditional Hindu mantras as source material, singer Deva Premal creates lush, beautiful music that falls somewhere between chanting and ambient New Age. DAKSHINA will please fans familiar with Premal's soothing, contemplative vocal approach. Classical Indian instrumentation (tablas can be heard through much of the album) abuts contemporary synthesizer sounds and textures, creating an aesthetic that is ancient and modern at once.
Yet it is Premal's rich, alluring vocals that take center stage here, ...
