(7 Customer Reviews)
On its third studio outing, THE SOUND OF MADNESS, the post-grunge group Shinedown offers up another set of dramatic heavy rock. Easily the Floridian band's most dynamic album, MADNESS features both fierce, metallic tracks ("Devour," "Sin with a Grin") and surprisingly tender moments (the sensitive ballad "If You Only Knew"), with each tune emphasizing singer Brent Smith's powerful Chris Cornell-like vocals. Sound Of Madness album
$10.19 Shinedown's debut album is a blast of updated vintage Florida alt-rock that should find a home in the hearts of those for whom the flames of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden still burn brightly. This Jacksonville Florida quartet's take on the genre puts all the requisite elements in place--Layne Staley/Chris Cornell-esque vocals, grinding guitars, in-your-face-drums--but LEAVE A WHISPER is no by-the-numbers exercise.
"Fly From the Inside" is a soaring hymn to the power of self-realization, while the teen angst-laden ballad "Burning Bright" could well be the band's theme song. The lesson of the 1990s has been that nobody ever went broke combining Shinedown's theme of alienation set to over-amped rock & roll, and the band, to their credit, embody this theme as well, if not better, than many of their peers.

| | Shinedown Us And Them CD (2005)
Sound Of Madness CD music
$10.39 A marked improvement over their debut, LEAVE A WHISPER, Shinedown's sophomore effort, US AND THEM (2005), is a more focused take on the group's hard-hitting post-grunge sound. The band's primary influences--Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Creed--are relatively clear, yet there are also touches of nu-metal and emo expressivity. Given the familiar territory it covers, US AND THEM isn't exactly a musical revelation, but lead singer Brent Smith wails admirably, the guitars are chunky and churning, and the overall package rocks.

| | Theory Of A Deadman Scars & Souvenirs CD (2008)
Sound Of Madness music CDs
$12.19 Melodic post-grunge wailers Theory of a Deadman have more in common with mentors Nickelback than just a shared north-of-the-border home base. Like the platinum radio-rockers, Theory isn't afraid to tone the heaviness down on songs like soaring power ballad "Heaven (Little By Little)" and sad-sack country-rocker "Hate My Life." SCARS AND SOUVENIRS features first-class chest-thumping vocals from Tyler Connolly and a sturdy ...
| | 3 Doors Down CD (2008)
Sound Of Madness songs
$11.35 With a sound equal parts Pearl Jam/Creed grunge-anthemic and Hinder modern/heavy, and a touch of hard-edged Southern rock that betrays its Mississippi origins, 3 Doors Down was a huge success straight out of the gate, and quickly became one of the biggest rock bands in the country. The group's fourth album finds it continuing confidently down the path the band established, as Brad Arnold's voice contrasts heavyweight wailing with contemplative ...
| | Disturbed Indestructible CD (2008)
Sound Of Madness album
$10.59 Disturbed is one of the few bands that can be uncompromisingly cynical and captivatingly inspirational at the same time. If 2005's TEN THOUSAND FISTS was a call to arms, then INDESTRUCTIBLE is a rampaging battle cry. Disturbed enters the melee with all guns blazing and refuses to grant mercy up until the very last track. The band seems to abhor the notion of "filler," so each track on INDESTRUCTIBLE was crafted with forceful purpose. The simple chord changes are brutal, lucid, and infectious; the production is crisp and the vocal arrangements ...
| | Nickelback Dark Horse CD (2008)
Sound Of Madness CD music
$15.65 Nickleback's sixth album doesn't stake out new ground, but this Canadian post-grunge quartet is known for their allegiance to old-school hard rock values. That allegiance is borne out on 2008's DARK HORSE, a collection of riff-driven rockers and power ballads that thrives on simple chord progressions, distortion-heavy guitars, and lyrics about partying and other carnal delights. The singalong single "Gotta Be Somebody" may flirt with radio-ready pop, but most of DARK HORSE revels in denim-clad, bad boy swagger.
It's hard to forget that Nickleback is a mainstream act, however, especially given the potent, high-gloss sound of the album, courtesy of veteran producer Robert "Mutt" Lang. Like Def Leppard, another Lang-produced band, Nickleback's rock is packaged prettily enough for soccer moms, a truth evident in accessible ballads ...
