| | Antonio Carlos Jobim / Elis Regina Ellis & Tom CD Antonio Carlos Jobim / Elis Regina Discography of CDs
In 1974, bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim teamed up with Elis Regina, one of Brazil's finest and most beloved singers, for a recording that ranks among the best Brazilian pop albums ever. Jobim's compositions are renowned for their melodicism and intricacy, and they are beautifully showcased here. This is largely due to Regina's masterfully subtle and breathy performances (listen to her slow reading of "Corcovado" for a case study in perfection), but everything about this disc, from the clear, tasteful arrangements to the way the voice of Jobim and Regina interact, is a delight. Alongside select albums by Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso, ELIS & TOM is a must-have for even the most casual Brazilian fan.

Ellis & Tom album
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness ...

| | Rosalyn Jordan-Mills Deliverance CD (2005)
Ellis & Tom music CDs
$14.79 In the mirrors of time and space there was a reflection of hurt and pain in her life. Rosalyn needed an answer to her cry. Sixteen years ago there was a God who heard her cry of hurt and pain. Fed up with the life she was leading and going nowhere fast, she knew that there was something better than what she was experiencing at that time. Through the prayers of family and friends, Rosalyn went to a service where the Holy Spirit was moving, people were lifting their hands and praising God and singing songs of worship and praise. This church was Victory Outreach Ministries International. She was brought up in a musical family and sang with her twin brother and sister in churches through ...
| | Luiz Bonfa Braziliana CD (1965) Remastered; Digipak
Ellis & Tom songs
$8.16 Recorded in 1965 and produced by Bobby Scott, Braziliana is the first American collaborative effort between Brazilian composer and guitarist Luiz Bonfá and his wife, vocalist Maria Toledo. The set consists of 14 Bonfá originals and highlights every aspect of his compositional landscape, from sambas to jazzy pop songs, neo-classical pieces for guitar, and his modern attempts to integrate Brazilian folk forms. Certainly there was an ulterior motive for Philips recording this album with Scott -- the worldwide success of Astrud and Joao Gilberto's collaborations with Stan Getz. His arrangements lend a certain modern jazz tenet to some of these tunes -- such as the beautiful"Cavaquinho," with Toledo scatting ever so elegantly amid a small jazz combo that features the great drummer Hélcio Milito backed by a very young Dom Um Romao. But given the utter range and sophistication in Bonfá's tunes, it's hard to accept without critical consideration that he wasn't interested in presenting his startling musical range. Still, samba and bossa were the order of the year and there are some real gems here. The opener, "Whistle Samba," features a whistling Bonfá and wordless vocals byToledo ...

Ellis & Tom music CDs
$10.19 Coming at the end of the Talking Heads' discography, NAKED finds the Heads returning to many elements of the complex, polyrhythmic arrangements that marked their work earlier in the decade, prior to the rootsier LITTLE CREATURES. Reflecting a more European influence, NAKED was recorded in Paris and produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brings to bear his gift for making sprawling arrangements sound remarkably down-to-earth and radio-friendly (see U2). The album's truly special guest is former Smith Johnny Marr, who lends his imaginative fretboard work and timeless pop sensibility to tunes such as "Nothing but ...
