Elis & Tom album for sale Product Description

Elis & Tom album for sale by Antonio Carlos Jobim / Elis Regina was released Jun 03, 2008 on the Verve label. In 1974, bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim teamed up with Elis Regina, one of Brazil's finest and most beloved singers, for a recording that ranks among the best Brazilian pop albums ever. Elis & Tom songs Jobim's compositions are renowned for their melodicism and intricacy, and they are beautifully showcased here. This is largely due to Regina's masterfully subtle and breathy performances (listen to her slow reading of "Corcovado" for a case study in perfection), but everything about this disc, from the clear, tasteful arrangements to the way the voice of Jobim and Regina interact, is a delight. Elis & Tom CD music contains a single disc with 14 songs.   ...See Full Description

Wonderful
This an inspired, beatifully played ,well recorded CD. Elis Regina sings Jobim with the man himself. And what a band... The compositions and arrangements are so sophisticated that sound simple.

too much like 50's french music
Most numbers sound passe; the music is boring and elis sounds like she just lost her mom. Not my cup of tea.

Elis & Tom buy CD music On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights. The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for instance," have Monk adding rhythmic, dissonant punctuation to Coltrane's torrential stream of ideas, creating a thrilling push-pull balance. A superb date, and a must for fans of both artists, AT CARNEGIE HALL captures two of jazz's most important figures working in perfect symbiosis. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Award Winner

Serenade to a Soul Sister CD (1968) 4 stars

Elis & Tom songs One of the last great Horace Silver albums for Blue Note, Serenade to a Soul Sister is also one of the pianist's most infectiously cheerful, good-humored outings. It was recorded at two separate early-1968 sessions with two mostly different quintets, both featuring trumpeter Charles Tolliver and alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams, and drummers Mickey Roker and Billy Cobham. (Williams and Cobham were making some of their first recorded appearances since exiting the military.) Silver's economical, rhythmic piano style had often been described as funky, but the fantastic opener "Psychedelic Sally" makes that connection more explicit and contemporary, featuring a jubilant horn theme and a funky bass riff that both smack of Memphis soul. (In fact, it's kind of a shame he didn't pursue this idea more.) Keeping the album's playful spirit going, "Rain Dance" is a campy American Indian-style theme, and "Jungle Juice" has a mysterious sort of exotic, tribal flavor. "Kindred Spirits" has a different, more ethereal sort of mystery, and "Serenade to a Soul Sister" is a warm, loose-swinging tribute. You'd never know this album was recorded in one of the most tumultuous years in American history, but as Silver says in the liner notes' indirect jab at the avant-garde, he simply didn't believe in allowing "politics, hatred, or anger" into his music. Whether you agree with that philosophy or not, it's hard to argue with musical results as joyous and tightly performed as Serenade to a Soul Sister. ~ Steve Huey Lyricist: Horace Silver. Elis & Tom album for sale Digitally remastered by Jellied Loaf (Universal Mastering Studios-East). One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known albums, 1970's TIDE is a companion piece to 1967's WAVE, a similarly lush and smooth collection for producer Creed Taylor's CTI Records. In fact, this album's lengthy title track is a theme-and-variations exploration of the main melodic line from WAVE's title track. For most of the album, Eumir Deodato, soon to become famous for his own contributions to lite-jazz fusion, handles the arrangements. Comparing his contributions to those of longtime Taylor arranger of choice Claus Ogerman, TIDE is a sprightlier album with a somewhat looser, less orchestrated feel. Of the new tracks, "Tema Jazz" is the highlight, although the sparkling "Carinhoso" is nearly its equal. This reissue features remastered sound and four bonus tracks, including three alternate takes of "Tema Jazz." This is part of the Verve By Request series. Additional Tracks Recorded at the Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey between March 16 and May 22, 1970. Originally released on A&M (3031). Reissue producer: Richard Seidel. Elis & Tom CD music Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on October 9, 1964. Includes liner notes by James T. Maher and Mary Cleere Haran. Justifiably overshadowed by the peerless Getz/Gilberto album (which featured "Girl From Ipanema") from a year before, Getz/Gilberto #2 still holds its own with an appealing selection of fine jazz and bossa nova cuts. Unlike the first album's seamless collaboration by Getz, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, here Getz and Joao Gilberto turn in separate sets recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October of 1964. Backed by a stellar quartet comprised of vibraphonist Gary Burton, bassist Gene Cherico, and drummer Joe Hunt, Getz turns in a sparkling performances on the seldom covered ballad "Tonight I'll Shall Sleep With a Smile On My Face," while stretching out nicely on his original blues swinger "Stan's Blues." With the support of bassist Keeter Betts and drummer Helcio Milito, Gilberto displays his subtle vocal and guitar talents on a set of bossa nova favorites, including his own "Bim Bom" and Jobim's "Meditation." An appealing title amongst Getz's many bossa nova outings, but not an essential one. Newcomers should definitely start with the Getz/Gilberto album before checking this one out. ~ Stephen Cook Digitally remastered by Tom "Curly" Ruff (Polygram Studios). Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Personnel: Joao Gilberto (guitar); Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Gary Burton (vibraphone); Keter Betts, Gene Cherico (bass instrument); Hélcio Milito, Joe Hunt (drums). Elis & Tom buy CD music Along with Baden Powell and Laurindo Almeida (who came earlier), composer Luiz Bonfa ("Manha da Carnaval") was one of the prime Brazilian guitarists during bossa nova's heyday, releasing a string of American instrumental albums all through the '60s. (Charlie Byrd, who first introduced the music here, gave them all competition from the American side.) THE BRAZILIAN SCENE, recorded in 1966, features jazz flutist Jerome Richardson and arranger Hal Mooney, but it's mostly a showcase for Bonfa's strong classical guitar. Heavily influenced by Andres Segovia, Bonfa favors a more highly structured approach than the introspective Powell or the jazzy Almeida, producing a bright, aggressive sound that cuts right through the easy-listening arrangments. (The opening, "Avocado," even bears a small resemblance to the Tijuana Brass.) Though there are no bossa nova standards this time out, the light and breezy set is divided between Bonfa originals and choice covers such as "Yesterday" and "That Old Black Magic," on which the guitarist jauntily riffs in a syncopated samba, along with Brazilian drummer Helcio Milito. Personnel: Luiz Bonfá (guitar); Jerome Richardson (flute); Donald Payne (bass instrument); Hélcio Milito (drums). Arrangers: Hal Mooney; Luiz Bonfá.

Elis & Tom songs This live date, recorded in 1987, features Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim paired with Tropicalia diva Gal Costa. Jobim's gravelly voice might sound a bit worse for wear compared with his recordings from the `60s and early `70s, but RIO REVISITED still pleases with its offerings of classic Jobim compositions such as "One Note Samba," "Desafinado," and "Wave." Accompaniment from a large ensemble, and the contributions of the dynamic Costa, make this an engaging listen through and through. The set was remastered and reissued in 2008. Performers include: Gal Costa, Antonio Carlos Jobim, The Jobims (Elizabeth, Ana and Paulo), Maucha Adnet, Paulo Braga, Danilo Caymmi, Simone Caymmi, Sebastion Neto, Jaques Morelemnbaum.
