Set in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts, the story concerns Abigail, a teenager who once had an affair with married farmer John Proctor. Their relationship comes to an end, however, when his wife Elizabeth learns about it. One night, in the woods, Abigail and a group of girls undress and engage in a ritualistic ceremony, during which Abigail puts a deadly curse on Elizabeth.
But when this revelry is brought to light, the shocked villagers come to believe that Satan is in their town. A witch hunt begins, with arrests, trials and burnings at the stake in store for many of the accused girls.
Furthermore, the affair between John and Abigail does not escape scrutiny... A powerful adaptation of the classic stage play about a Puritan community in seventeenth century Massachusetts awash in guilt, denial, and hysteria when a ring of lustful teenage girls begins accusing its citizens of witchcraft. When one man fights to retain his integrity in the face of madness, the adolescent slander invariably extends to him. Based on actual historic events and meant as a metaphor for the paranoid persecutions of the McCarthy era, the story (re-penned for the screen by playwright Arthur Miller) is a parable about society's fascination with and revulsion for cultural scandal. Limited theatrical release in the USA November 27, 1996; wide release January 1997.

Weird but still watchable The Crucible is one of those movies that is frighteningly close to the events that inspired it.There are several strong performances in this movie. Submitted by Blake (Brandon,MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
WooHooooo! This is one of my favorite films of all time. The hysteria of the events on 1692 are portrayed well here. The beggining of the film in the forest is Miller's speculation, but the speech by Mr. Proctor at the end is terrific.
You must see this film. Submitted by aaron (Portland, Or, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
The Crucible (1996) This movie is difficult to follow if you dont have an understanding of the actual original play. Arthur Miller, who just died in 2005, famous for the production of "Death of a Salesman", wrote this during the 1950's when Washington was obsessed with finding Communist conspirators. Miller compared it to the out of control witch hunts of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts in which 19 people were hung for practicing witchcraft. It gets better the more you watch it. A Heart Bender And what would be the reason to bring someone up on charges of being a witch? Could it be that someone just doesn't like you?
This is a wonderful movie depicting the Salam witch trials, the possible beginning of those horrific events, and the truth of how brutal, weak and selfish human beings can be. This is also a love story, beautiful and painful... about temptation, lonliness, regret, forgiveness and making amends. Your heart will sink more than once. It is a keeper film. Daniel Day Lewis was unforgetable and Winona Rider is believable. Submitted by becky (Weatherford, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Crucible DVD The Salem witch trials of 1692 are brought vividly to life in this compelling adaptation of Arthur Miller's play, directed by Nicholas Hytner ("The Madness of King George"). A group of teenage girls meet in the woods at midnight for a secret love-conjuring ceremony. While the other girls attempt to cast love spells, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder) wishes for the death of her former lover's (Daniel Day-Lewis) wife. When their ceremony is witnessed by the town minister, the girls suddenly find themselves accused of witchcraft. Soon the entire village is consumed by cries of witchcraft, and as the hysteria grows, blameless victims are torn from their homes, leading to a devastating climax.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives of several recently graduated high school students. The genial Steve (Ron Howard) prepares to leave for college the next day, and Laurie (Cindy Williams), his girlfriend, is upset by his impending departure. Laurie's brother, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), the class intellectual, is also slated for college, but he has serious doubts about his ...
