| | Belphegor Walpurgis Rites: Hexenwahn CD (2009)
Girls Girls Girls
$12.85 Long-running Austrian death/black metal band Belphegor are masters of track and album titles. Previous discs have sported names like BONDAGE GOAT ZOMBIE, PESTAPOKALYPSE VI, and LUCIFER INCESTUS, with songs like "Belphegor -- Hell's Ambassador," "Sexdictator Lucifer," and "Demonic Staccato Erection." This new disc includes such life-affirming anthems as "Hail the New Flesh," "Veneratio Diaboli -- I Am Sin," and "Enthralled Toxic Sabbath." This album is also as good an introduction to Belphegor as any of their earlier releases.
Lyricists: Hecate; Belphegor; ...
| | Metallica Death Magnetic CD (2008)
Girls Girls Girls
$15.65 In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, with a little help from legendary producer Rick Rubin. One listen to the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption" with its mix of raw rock ferocity and complex musical development should tell you the old Metallica's back in business. Long tracks with complex structures and intricate, speedy riffs abound. Most appealing for longtime fans may be the return to the frenzied guitar solos of yore. Rubin seems to have assisted the band on a path that successfully combines power, melodicism, and pure, unadulterated metal mania, over a sonic statement that definitively proves there's nothing over-the-hill about middle-aged metal.
The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view of the creation of Metallica's 2003 album, ST. ANGER, via the documentary SOME KIND OF MONSTER, so we know they consciously tried to keep things contemporary at that time by avoiding fleet-fingered solos and eschewing the sound of the "old" Metallica. If that hoary old term "return to form" ever applied to a rock album, though, it's ...

| | Three Days Grace Life Starts Now CD (2009)
Girls Girls Girls
$12.19 The third studio album from Canadian arena rockers Three Days Grace treads familiar ground, presenting 12 slabs of the kind of reliable, accessible, and serviceable hard rock that will always have an audience. 2006's ONE-X dealt heavily with vocalist Adam Gontier's personal demons, a theme that continues on LIFE STARTS NOW, albeit with a hint of sunlight. With a sound that lands somewhere in between Breaking Benjamin, Collective Soul, and Godsmack--Gontier sounds like a less volatile Trent Reznor--LIFE STARTS NOW treats the well-worn metal themes of anger, isolation, heartache, and redemption with the kind of begrudging respect they deserve, pumping out a competent flurry of fist-bump anthems ("Break," "Bully") and world-weary, midtempo rockers ("World So Cold," "Last to Know" that are so painfully earnest that one can almost hear director Michael Bay pitching them to the studio for inclusion on the soundtracks for his next ten TRANSFORMERS sequels.

| | Jason Fickel Kerosene Cologne CD (2005)
Girls Girls Girls
$17.75 Singer-songwriter-guitarist Jason Fickel was born in Kansas and raised in western Colorado. Bitten by the blues, he headed south to Mississippi where he learned blues guitar and the blues trade from some masters--bluesmen James "Son" Thomas and Othar Turner. Next Fickel headed north, first to Rhode Island, where he played in coffeehouses and biker bars, and then on to Chicago, where he honed his songwriting craft. Now a resident of Indiana - America's Crossroads - Fickel continues to tour, write, and record original music.Kerosene Cologne showcases Jason's slide and electric guitar playing, anchored by his acoustic finger-picking and soulful vocals. Soaring background vocals and clever percussion by producer Lauren Robert, horns by Jonathan Elmer, and keyboard contributions by Slats Klug and ...

$34.15 | | Raspberries Side 3 CD (1973) Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Girls Girls Girls
$10.75 The final album featuring the Raspberries' classic line-up, SIDE 3 is characterized by a heavier, more straight-ahead rock sound than the power-pop legends' previous efforts. The Beatle-esque melodies and smooth harmony vocals are still there, but songs like the boogie-fueled "Hard to Get Over a Heartbreak" and "I'm A Rocker" have more to do with Moby Grape or T.Rex than with the Fab Four. Like the band's first two LPs, SIDE 3 opens up with a classic, genre-defining ...
