Execution album
$19.89 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's ...
| | Stryper Murder By Pride CD (2009)
Execution CD music
$10.65 After the original Stryper lineup (minus bassist Tim Gaines) reunited for 2005's somewhat alternative/nu-metal tinged REBORN, the band made a stylistic return to form with MURDER BY PRIDE. Brimming with harmonized twin guitar leads, big hair metal-approved shout-along hooks, and Michael Sweet's trademark soaring, Dennis DeYoung-esque ...
| | Atreyu Congregation Of The Damned CD (2009)
Execution music CDs
$11.65 On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach. Like their last album, the songs here feel somewhat restrained, like they're just dying to break free of the polished production. The intensity of SUICIDE NOTES and BUTTERFLY KISSES seems to have been put out to pasture, with the songs feeling more deliberately poppy.

| | King Diamond Voodoo CD (1998) Reissue; Remastered
Execution album
$11.18 On King Diamond's eighth concept album, the prolific horror rocker hasn't entirely run out of ideas, although the material on Voodoo is generally predictable. Set in New Orleans, the story line is loaded with more witchcraft, haunted houses, and ghosts. The music stays true to form as well; Diamond's cartoonishly ghastly vocals haven't lost any of their bite, ...

| | Silent Voices Infernal CD (2004) Bonus Track; Japan
Execution music CDs
$31.45 This Japanese import edition of Silent Voices' INFERNAL features a bonus recording.
It's doubtful that power metal will ever regain the huge commercial momentum it enjoyed in the '80s, when bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensr˙che sold millions of albums. But the power metal revival movement of the '90s and 2000s has enjoyed a small cult following, especially in Europe -- nothing to rival the sales of Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime or Priest's Screaming for Vengeance back in the day, but not something to be ashamed of either. Most of today's power metal revival bands offer an exact replica of power metal as it was known in the late '70s and early '80s; on Infernal, however, Silent Voices adds a bit of thrash to the mix. This Finnish band is power metal first and foremost, ...

| | Soulfly Conquer CD (2008)
Execution music CDs
$15.65 The dulcet strains of the orchestral introduction signal a new era of Soulfly's creative energy. CONQUER shows a much rejuvenated Soulfly at the top of their game. No longer confined to the simple, groove-based metalcore shackles, Soulfly demonstrates considerable artistic growth on each and every track. CONQUER sounds as though Max Cavalera and his mob of highly skilled musicians have returned to their "roots," bringing classic death metal and grindcore into the 21st century for a new generation. It is rare for a band 10 years into its career to reinvent itself this way. With guest appearances by Dave Peters (Throwdown) and David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Soulfly has done exactly that, and CONQUER is a most apt title for the result.
The Soulfly tribe is once again on the warpath. Soulfly's sixth offering for Roadrunner Records, Conquer, may very well be the musical equivalent of the movie Braveheart. The songs -much like the warriors in the film- channel raw, unbridled rage through a cacophony of thrash guitars, infectious grooves, tribal polyrhythms and Max Cavalera's unmistakable, thunderous roar. On this record, Soulfly unleash a metallic mayhem unlike anything they've done previously. Conquer shifts from unrelenting, precise speed metal to slow, brooding doom. Once again, it's the legendary Max Cavalera who stands at the eye of the storm, uniting the musical tribe and acting as its unofficial leader. Since their Silver-certified, self-titled debut in 1997, Soulfly have remained one of the genre's most consistently brutal outfits. From the moment Max Cavalera left Sepultura to form Soulfly, he's remained prolific. Four critically acclaimed albums and numerous world tours followed Soulfly's now-classic ...

$10.15 Mabel McGee and Pennsylvania Slim are the monikers of singer-songwriters Willow Scrivner and David Bavas in their alt-country-noir collaboration due out November of 2008. Guitarist, Kevin Wood, recorded the album bringing a Daniel Lanois-like sound to the mix, as well as a country twang with lap steel and electric guitars. Willow, Kevin, and David met five years ago in a Seattle apartment building as next-door ...
