| | Jimmy Durante Songs For Sunday CD Jimmy Durante Discography of CDs
One of the few performers who flourished in music, radio, TV, and film, Jimmy Durante (1893-1980) remains a beloved figure to this day. He played piano, sang in a gravelly, good-naturedly raspy voice, and cheerfully mangled the English tongue when speaking, never taking himself seriously at all. Yet Durante did have a serious side, as the 1967 devotional album, SONGS FOR SUNDAY, will attest to. Without a hint of sanctimony, he sings each religious standard in a gentle, vulnerable manner, lending each performance a genial, earthbound feeling. Songs For Sunday album
$14.95 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and ...

Songs For Sunday album
$7.95 Recorded between 1962 & 1974. Includes liner notes by Alec Cumming.
At less than ten bucks, these 16 prime-time tracks from stately, elegant Dionne Warwick -- who unfortunately spent more time with the Psychic Friends Network than she did in the recording studio recently -- are a bargain. A virtual Hal David/Burt Bacharach songbook, only two tracks were not written by the hall of fame composers: "Then Came You," composed by Thom Bell/Sherman Marshall, and the Previns' "Theme From Valley of the Dolls." Every tune you expect to be on a Dionne Warwick best-of set is here, from the all-time favorite "Don't Make Me Over" to "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," which could be done without. Not a complete overview by any means but a good tight compilation of her major chart slayers. ~ Andrew Hamilton

| | John Fahey After The Ball CD (1973)
Songs For Sunday songs
$11.59 Pairing Fahey with what appears to be a Dixieland revival band, After the Ball, Fahey's second and last Reprise release, stands as one of the stranger recordings of his enigmatic career. With Fahey performing solo and in duet with mandolin, banjo, and uke player Allen Reuse, or with an entire "orchestra" backing him, the album suffers from too many mood swings. Individually, however, the tunes are strong and the arrangements very accessible and light. This may have to do with the fact that it was Fahey's first step (along with his 1972 release, Of Rivers and Religion) into the mainstream. Notably, the major label album release would help gather momentum for crossover solo acoustic steel string instrumentalists such as Alex De Grassi and William Ackerman in years to come. Although the "orchestra" featured on the album tends to squash out Fahey entirely, his solo guitar is featured on nearly every tune. The several solo and duet pieces include originals ...
