Union officer William Holden contends with Johnny Reb prisoners inside Fort Bravo...and fierce Indians outside. John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven) directs. This Civil War-era Western bristles with action and deadly suspense. William Holden plays a tough Union cavalry officer at odds with both a band of restless Confederate prisoners and deadly Mescalero Indians. William Holden stars as tough Union calvary officer Capt. Roper, who commands a POW garrison at Fort Bravo in the Arizona Territory during the Civil War. Roper, who rules his demesnes with an iron hand, is famous for never allowing a prisoner to escape, a tribute both to his obsessive professionalism and to the inhospitable landscape surrounding the fort. As a result, his own troops hate him nearly as much as the prisoners do. Adding to his problems are the vicious Mescalero Indians roaming the land that was once theirs. Roper, then, is not the most joyful of men. But when the distracting Carla Forrester (Eleanor Parker) arrives at the garrison, his mood seems to change perceptibly. While he's still narcotized by her charms, a group of prisoners decide to take advantage of his relaxed vigilance and make a break, without having factored the local Indians into the equation. Roper, even more angry than usual after realizing he's been set up, lights out after the Confederate fugitives. Holden is perfectly cast as the surly Yankee, and the desert shots of the estimable Robert Surtees are beautifully composed. Shooting location: Death Valley, California, and New Mexico.
This was the first MGM film to be shot in the widescreen aspect ratio. Escape From Fort Bravo Reviews: "...John Sturges' first notable Western....[With] a nifty Civil War hook..."

Escape From Fort Bravo film
$10.29 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. ...
