NTSC/Region 1. French language with English subtitles. Stars Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris and Fabrice Luchini. Directed by Cedric Klapisch. Pierre, a professional dancer, suffers from a serious heart disease. While he is waiting for a transplant which may (or may not) save his life, he has nothing better to do than look at the people around him, from the balcony of his Paris apartment. When Elise, his sister with three kids and no husband, moves in to his place to care for him, Pierre does not change his new habits. And instead of dancing himself, it is Paris and the Parisians who dance before his eyes. The City of Lights gets further illumination in this film from L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOL director Cedric Klapisch. The director, frequent collaborator Roman Duris, Juliette Binoche, and a host of France's finest actors create a film that celebrates the city with a number of interconnected narratives. Paris Reviews: 4 stars out of 5 -- "As Klapisch wanders through vignettes of dreams and disappointments, he offers a captivating and never prescriptive paean to humanity's will to survive."-- Liz Beardsworth, Empire 3 stars out of 5 -- "A Gallic SHORT CUTS, you could say -- although, being French, PARIS comes across quieter and more reflective than Altman's masterwork."-- Philip Kemp, Total Film 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This vibrant portrait of the film's titular city will be irresistible to Francophiles....Binoche brings her natural charm to her compassionate character."-- Wade Major, Box Office 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[E]very character has life and depth....As the narrative circles through their stories, we're genuinely curious about what will happen next."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "As befits a film about a dancer staring down death, PARIS roots its best moments in movement rather than dialogue."-- Nathan Rabin, A.V. Club "Both a Parisian answer to Woody Allen's MANHATTAN and a multicharacter mosaic in the mode of Robert Altman's SHORT CUTS, the movie sprawls invitingly across the screen like a glowing Impressionist painting."-- Stephen Holden, New York Times "[W]hat lifts PARIS from the subgenre pack is a fine ensemble, in particular the emotional chemistry between two of the screen's most magnetic actors, Juliette Binoche and Romain Duris."-- Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times "[E]very character has life and depth....As the narrative circles through their stories, we're genuinely curious about what will happen next."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times “PARIS pulses with a contemporary version of the energy that animated Balzac’s novels, or Colette’s accounts of the life she observed from the window of her apartment in the Palais Royal.”Wall Street Journal "Cedric Klapisch's intoxicating portrait of a city that despite (or, more likely, because of) being in a state of constant flux, retains timeless energy and allure."Washington Post

$19.55 Daniel Auteil sheds the dramatic character of Michael Hanneke's CACHÉ to star in this light French comedy. Auteil plays François, an antiques dealer who finds it far easier to locate an Art Deco rarity than a true friend. He has plenty of professional contacts, but an utter lack of people skills leaves him alone after office hours. His business partner bets an expensive vase that he can't produce a friend within 10 days, and François struggles to pick out a best friend in an address book full of acquaintances and childhood chums. He keeps running into fellow loner Bruno (Dany Boon, THE VALET), who is friendly but can't trust anyone. Bruno teaches him to be "sympathique" (sociable) as François continues his search.
Even though MY BEST FRIEND centers on a man's search for a friend, it resembles a standard romantic comedy in its structure. It may lack an innovative plot, but this French gem makes up for it in charm. Auteil plays François with such energy that it's hard not to have affection for the man. Director Patrice Leconte has blended darkness and light in his past films such as THE MAN ON THE TRAIN, and he succeeds again here. Though MY BEST FRIEND is largely ...

Paris review
$14.69 The struggle to achieve resident alien status, or gain full-blown citizenship in the United States, provides some thought-provoking material in this feature from director Wayne Kramer(THE COOLER). CROSSING OVER is an ensemble piece that contains many overlapping storylines, most of which revolve around Max Brogan (Harrison Ford), a law enforcement official who specializes in arresting people who break stringent immigration laws. Joining Ford is Ray Liotta, who plays a corrupt immigration official who forces a wannabe Australian actress (Alice Eve) to sleep with him in exchange for a green card. The film also focuses on the rigorous guidelines laid down in post-9/11 America, with Kramer detailing the shocking maltreatment of a teenage girl who faces deportation after giving a misguided high school presentation on terrorism. These tales, and several others, all combine to present an intricate overview of the desperate and often overwhelmingly sad lengths people will go to so they can remain in the United States.
Kramer’s film closely mirrors other harrowing ensemble pieces such as Paul Haggis’s CRASH (2004) and Richard Linklater’s FAST FOOD NATION (2006). CROSSING OVER carefully presents many different sides of this complicated issue and also examines how coincidence and good fortune can play a part in achieving resident status. Ford is perfectly cast as the downcast lead character who battles with the moral and ethical ramifications of his job, and frequently gets too close to the people he is required to prosecute. Kramer skillfully interweaves each tale and allows just enough screen time to each of his ...

Paris movie DVD
$16.00 A shocking and offbeat story of two French lovers, Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) and Betty (Beatrice Dalle), who fall into a deeply erotic and all-encompassing relationship. Zorg is a simple repairman in his mid-thirties who lives a relatively dull life in a remote, weathered shack until he meets Betty, a sexy, mercurial younger woman who challenges his way of thinking and forces him to change his life. When Betty and Zorg are not having wild and uninhibited sex (and joyously traipsing around naked), Zorg is writing his novel, an unpublished masterwork that Betty discovers and vehemently champions. Betty, prone to violent fits of passionate rage, attacks Zorg's boss and burns their shack down, leaving Zorg no choice but to join her on a series of spirited adventures. They move in with Betty's best friend and her boyfriend and for a brief time live a happy bohemian lifestyle, wild and crazy in love. But as the film progresses, Betty's mental illness becomes more apparent, she lives in a fitful manic world of passionate highs and lows while Zorg desperately attempts to coddle and comfort her. Finally, the lovers start over in a dreamy rural town, hoping ...

Paris film
This beautifully photographed, touching film follows Alloune, a man who gives tours of the Senegal coastline where long ago his ancestors where imprisoned and shipped across the Atlantic in the slave trade. Through a slender doorway looking out to the wide ocean beyond, participants in Alloune's tour are moved, saddened, and quieted by the thought of what once was. Then one day, Alloune decides that he must track the path of his own ancestors, and so he travels to the southern United States. He wanders from one former plantation to the next, asking questions, looking in libraries, and researching an extended family tree, always carrying the weight of history on his small, long, thin frame. Finally his search leads him to New York City, where he locates a young nephew, and then a female cousin who is about his same age, in her fifties. Taking a job for his cousin as a security guard at her Harlem newspaper stand, Alloune begins the difficult task of adapting to city life. The relationship between Alloune and ...

$23.75 Two years after forming his own production company, Jet Tone, Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai released ASHES OF TIME, a martial-arts epic based on THE EAGLE-SHOOTING HEROES, a series of novels by Louis Cha writing under the pseudonym Jin Yong. The film was set in jianghu, an imaginary world with its own views of good and evil. In 2008, unhappy with the many alternate versions of ASHES OF TIME available, Wong reedited and restored the film, working with the original negative and soundtrack, which were in severe disrepair. The new version, called ASHES OF TIME REDUX, which screened at such prestigious international gatherings as the Cannes, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals, is a breathtaking example of Wong's masterly storytelling technique, combined with the stunning cinematography of Christopher Doyle and gorgeous new cello solos recorded by Yo-Yo Ma. Leslie Cheung stars as Ouyang Feng, a mysterious man living alone in the desert, where people come to him when they need someone eliminated. He is visited annually by Huang Yaoshi (Tony Leung Ka Fai), who brings him stories from the outside world--and especially his lost love (Maggie Cheung). Meanwhile, Murong Yang (Brigitte Lin) has contracted to have Huang killed, and Murong Yin (also Lin) wants her brother taken care of. For a film that examines the role of memory in people's lives, Wong assembled an all-star cast that also includes Tony Leung Chiu Wai as a blind swordsman, Carina Lau as his wife, Charlie Young as a young girl seeking vengeance, and Jacky Cheung as a poor swordsman looking for work. ASHES OF TIME REDUX is a visual treat, with Doyle (who has also teamed with Wong ...

$21.15 Scott Prendergast makes his feature-film debut as an actor, director, and writer with the quirky black comedy KABLUEY. Prendergast stars as Salman, a ne'er-do-well with no money and no place to live. He moves in with his sister-in-law, Leslie (Lisa Kudrow), promising to take care of her kids while she works; her husband (his brother), a member of the National Guard, is still in Iraq, his tour extended yet again. Unfortunately for Salman, his nephews, Lincoln (Landon Henninger) and Cameron (Cameron Wofford), are unholy, unstoppable terrors. Wanting him to get back on his own two feet, Leslie finds Salman a job at her very strange, hilariously absurd company, BlueNexion, where Salman must get inside a big blue costume and hand out flyers in the middle of a nearly deserted highway. But when he finds out a little too much about Leslie, he is put into an awkward situation that he's not sure he can get out of easily. Prendergast excels in the role of sad-sack Salman; whether he's sweating inside his costume, listening to an annoying chatterbox on the bus, or getting dinner ready for the kids, his deadpan, pathetically funny look is reminiscent of Buster Keaton's. Kudrow is in fine form as Leslie, a troubled mother who seems fed up with her life. The strong supporting cast also includes Conchata Ferrell as Salman's perpetually screaming loudmouthed boss, Angela Sarafyan as a weird grocery-store clerk, and Teri Garr as a somewhat deranged woman who lost her savings with BlueNexion and takes it out on the company's big blue mascot. Roddy Bottum's ...

$15.09 Gabriele Muccino (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS) directs this tale of a man devastated by a tragedy in his past who is seeking redemption. To the outside world, Ben Thomas (Will Smith) is a cordial, atypically helpful agent for the Internal Revenue Service. But when he's alone, Ben is tormented by a tragic incident in his past, sinking into grief. He's even cut off communication with his beloved brother (Michael Ealy). Nevertheless, Ben is especially interested in strangers with challenging circumstances. He's taken particular interest in Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), a lovely young woman with congenital heart disease who is being audited by the IRS. Ben finds himself falling for Emily, and has to choose the best way to follow his heart.
Smith wears Ben's heart on his sleeve, the pain of his past loss and his impending future apparent in his face both when he is alone and when he begins to feel happiness--which he doesn't think he deserved--with Emily. He also nails Ben's pleasant work persona, masking his pain as he charms strangers and earns their trust. Dawson is beguiling as Emily, whose only wish is to have more time to experience life, especially once she finds love with Ben. With flashbacks mixed into the story, ...
