A former wartime flight commander has to take control of a jet after every pilot aboard comes down with food poisoning -- even though he's now too scared to fly.
The airplane's passengers include a wild assortment of comic loonies. The spoof comedy that set the gold standard for all that followed it, AIRPLANE takes shots at the slew of disaster movies that peppered cinemas in the 70s. When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food poisoning, a rogue pilot (who has a drinking problem and is afraid of flying) must cooperate with his ex-girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing. No disaster flick cliche is left unroasted, and the musical score itself takes a less than reverent look at overly melodramatic compositions.
The plot of this film -- on which the spoof is hung -- is based on a 1957 movie called "Zero Hour!" The film also borrows from the more recent disaster film "Airport."
Although this was a low-budget film, it did better than many of the big budget movies of that year.

I've loved this movie since I was 10 years old!! My son just saw it for the first time and he thought it was hilarious... though some of the innuendoes were not understood, which is a really good thing!!

This has got to be the funniest comedy I have seen so far. Not even the commedies from today can be compered to Airplane. You can watch it a million times and still laugh out loud! If your looking for a good laugh, then watch Airplane! Garranteed!

It is one of ten best comedies ever made. Every time I watch it I see something that I missed before. It keeps you laughing from beginning until end. Don't forget to watch the very last scene after the credits roll.

In answer to your question about the missing scene in Airplane!. I've noticed in this movie and the sequal, when shown on cable there are certain scenes missing. Some of them were shot just for television and are added to fill in where the "too nasty for TV" parts are cut out. The same happened in Blazing Saddles, there's a scene when the Gov and Lilly Von Schtup ride into the fake Rock Ridge in a carriage for some "political schmoozing with the locals". Mel Brooks has his photo taken with one of the dummy's that was made right before the bad guys showed up.

The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco dance-pop rhythms and Thatcher/Reagan materialism -- an era that encouraged songs called "Credit Card Baby." If this dichotomy between the A-sides and B-sides is far too great to make this essential, the way Faith later would be, those A-sides range from good to terrific. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is absolute silliness whose very stupidity is its strength, and if "Everything She Wants" is merely agreeable bubblegum, "Freedom" is astounding, a sparkling Motown rip-off rippling with spirit and a timeless melody later ripped off by Noel Gallagher. Then, there's the concluding "Careless Whisper," a soulful slow one where Michael regrets a one-night stand over a richly seductive background and a yearning saxophone. It was an instant classic, and it was the first indication of George Michael's strengths as a pop craftsman -- which means it points the way to Faith, not the halfhearted Edge of Heaven. ~ Stephen ...

Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker--of AIRPLANE! and NAKED GUN fame--wrote and directed this genre-hopping slapstick juggernaut which lampoons World War II spy films and Elvis movies, making many other satirical stops along the way. Here's a gooey, hilarious, creepy horror film for the whole mutant cannibal family. Michael Rooker (HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) stars as Grant, a big bald guy from a small southern town who gets possessed by a meat-hungry parasite worm creature from space. Even under the alien influence he still loves his wife, Starla (Elizabeth Banks), but she's alarmed at his weird new habits, such as consuming all the local wildlife. The sheriff in town (Nathan Fillion) investigates. He still carries a torch for Starla from when they were kids, but once the squirming, slithering, and cannibalism begin in earnest, it becomes clear that this is no time for romance.
SLITHER's combination of interesting characters, deadpan humor, gore aplenty, and genuine scares earns it a place alongside cult classics like RE-ANIMATOR and the various LIVING DEAD and EVIL DEAD films.
