Singer/songwriter Monroe is a generic heartland rocker from the West Coast. His music is pretty reflective of that situation. He carves out huge, almost anthemic rock songs that are faceless on the surface, shallow at their core. Unmemorable, undistinguished, and totally bland, Shame never generates even an ounce of exhilaration. Yawn. ~ Michael Gallucci
"Shame" starts out with the title track, a Texas Dance Hall free for all, that includes a musical break that exhibits Monroe's sense of humor and musical reach - it's a carnival like break that smiles - then back to the straight forward blues based country-rock.Monroe's voice is somewhere between Kenny Chesney & Black Crows - very poppy, yet soulful with country like phrasing and an occasional blues flavored fun. This is country-rock/pop, and every song shines with hummable hooks, melodies, and interesting lyrics.Major labels ought to be creaming - Monroe's image is like icing on the cake, not that I care, but 13 year old girls probably will and damn, isn't funny how that demographic keeps buying records. That is not to take away from the obvious musical substance that exists in Monroe's records. This 1972 solo piano album is one of Paul Bley's best--and this from a man who has made many excellent recordings. Beautiful in its brevity, the album is decorated with pieces that evoke the French composers Milhaud and Satie (though Bley is far more obtuse). Three compositions are by Carla Bley, two are by Annette Peacock (his first and second wives, respectively), and another two are by Bley himself. This is a perfectly balanced set. The pieces all ring with chamber-like clarity.

Teen group B2K apparently burned bright and brief, scoring their first hit in 2002 and announcing their split in the first days of 2004. However, they go out in full blaze, starring with Marques Houston in the hip-hop-dreams/dance-contest movie YOU GOT SERVED. The foursome also logically provide the bulk of the film's infectious soundtrack--a collection of danceable, sensual rap-infused R&B songs born to fuel epic battles on the dance-floor, cut by the requisite slow jams.
