| | Catdaddy Jones Late Night In The Dog House CD (2003)
Mountains On Moon CD music
$12.85 Catdaddy Jones, a busman's holiday for four veteran New York sidemen, Geoff Worton, M.D. Meyer, Steve Merola, and Paul Bisbano, is a straight-ahead blues-rock band in a familiar style. The promotional sheet for their debut album, Late Night in the Doghouse, says, "Think the Asbury Jukes with a grittier singer and Jeff Beck on guitar!," and among the "key selling points" is this: "Record will appeal to fans of Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Memphis soul and urban blues." But these comparisons are not quite on the mark. In fact, if one were to listen to Late Night in the Doghouse without any information about the artists involved, it would be easy, at least the first time through, to suppose that the disc was some lost album by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The roadhouse rhythms, screaming blues guitar, and, in particular, the powerful lead vocals all suggest the Texas band. True, there isn't any harmonica on the record, and there are some female backup vocals here and there, but fans of the Fab T-Birds are still going to feel right at home here. As is fitting for a band of pros, the music is cohesive and easygoing, and the songs, both the originals and covers like the Beatles' "I Call Your Name" and Manfred Mann's "Pretty Flamingo," are less important in themselves than as platforms for the playing ...

| | Bebel Gilberto All In One CD (2009)
Mountains On Moon CD music
$12.05 With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Ronson takes the song back to Wonder's Motown roots, also quoting from Saint Etienne's vibrant update of classic soul production. Gilberto sounds most confident elsewhere, however, especially ...

Although the three of them have been singing together in group, choir, and at church for over eleven years, the actual group "Angelic Express" formed in 2001, when their father "Arthur Lunceford" had a vision of them singing to many different people in a lot of different arenas. Together, they have grown in musical talent and stage presence, and feel so blessed to be used by God to minister to people everywhere. Amber is attending Oakville Middle school in the 8th grade. Jennifer is attending Metro (school of the gifted) and is in the 9th grade now. And last, but not least Alexis is attending Oakville Senior High, she is a senior this year, and plans to go Maryville ...
